The big deal about IBM’s tiny chips

IBM is making a big deal of celebrating a tiny achievement, successfully producing a 7nm chip that could mean huge efficiency improvements in phones, laptops and more. Squeezing more than 20 billion transistors into a chip the size of a fingernail took figuring out new manufacturing processes and chewed through part of a $3bn investment IBM earmarked back in 2014, but it's shaping up to be worth every cent. Big Blue predicts a power/performance increase of more than 50-percent from the smaller processors.

NASA has announced the tech toys its Europa mission will be equipped with, a battery of gadgets to do scientific study with around Jupiter's moon. Nine instruments have been selected after NASA threw open its inbox to suggestions from the research community, in preparation for the $30m study that will hopefully see a solar-powered craft orbit Europa's icy surface for three years. Among the hardware will be instrumentation to figure out if the moon does indeed have huge underground oceans.

NASA discovers brightest galaxy, burning with 300 trillion suns

NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) has discovered a remote galaxy, far, far away that is the brightest galaxy known to date. Researchers calculated it burns with the light of 300 trillion suns. The sheer brightness of this galaxy puts it in an entirely new class of space objects, extremely luminous infrared galaxies (ELIRGs), discovered using WISE. NASA has been using WISE, opposed to other methods, to target ELIRGs because the dust surrounding these super-luminous galaxies blocks visible light, and reduces it to infrared light.

Hubble spots giant gas halo around Andromeda Galaxy

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has spotted a giant gas halo around the Andromeda Galaxy, something that is said to be so large it stretched approximately a million lightyears from the Andromeda Galaxy and halfway to the Milky Way. The discovery was made by a team of researchers being led by Notre Dame’s Nicolas Lehner, an astrophysicist. With this discovery, researchers will be able to discern more about these massive spiral galaxies, including both the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way.

NASA's MAVEN craft has sent back data on auroras and dust at high altitudes above Mars - the latter is a mystery to observers both amateur and professional. Believe it or not, Target had a streaming video service for the past 2-years. Did you know about it? Apparently not a lot of people did, as Target has decided to shut the service down. "Target has made the decision," the company said this week "to end the services offered on Target Ticket and will be focusing efforts on other entertainment offerings." This means they'll be bringing more heat to their other, slightly more physical media. Meanwhile those that actually DID know there was a Target streaming video service and actually DID purchase videos through said service will be able to access these videos through CinemaNow.

Planck knocks 100m years off oldest stars, no Botox needed

Age may only be a number, but it turns out some of the oldest stars in the universe could be a lot younger than believed, according to new results from the Planck telescope. While scientists had previously estimated that the first stars began to shine 440m years after the Big Bang, itself pegged at 13.8 billion years ago, new results from the decommissioned ESA space telescope suggest that may have been off by as much as 100m years. Spilling the stars' age secrets are freshly calculated maps of cosmic background radiation, that help explain when reionization of the universe began.
