Intel joins Alliance for Wireless Power: Ultra-convenience for your ultrabook

Intel has thrown in with the Alliance for Wireless Power, joining the Samsung and Qualcomm founded standards group pushing cable-free recharging for phones, tablets, laptops, and other devices. Taking a place on the A4WP board of directors, the group confirms [pdf link], Intel will be pushing for wireless power in ultrabooks and other mobility devices its chips are found inside, potentially opening the door to a desk that can one day rejuice your phone, slate, and your notebook, simply by placing them on top of it.

Sony unveils VAIO Duo 13 hybrid laptop with slider keyboard

Sony has unveiled a couple new laptops this evening, among them being a new slider hybrid called the VAIO Duo 13. This laptop uses Sony's Surf Slider design to switch from a slate into a laptop with a slider keyboard complete with a trackpad. Thus far Sony has only said the hybrid will be available sometime in the middle of this month, rolling out worldwide for a yet-unspecified price.

Intel has predicted a $399 sticker price for the 2-in-1 tablet/laptop hybrids expected to challenge ARM-based machines from this summer, a newly competitive price tag given the chip maker's previous struggles in the mobility segment. Building on Intel's 4th-gen Core "Haswell" announcement, the new 2-in-1 details are part of the company's attempt to match what have traditionally been the strengths of ARM chips from NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and others: low power consumption, strong multimedia performance, and fanless designs.

Today at Computex Acer has revealed several products in the Windows 8 arena, coming in with a tablet that's made for a single hand, as they say, with the Acer Iconic W3. This machine is the first 8-inch tablet to have been introduced with full Windows 8 aboard, also working with an Intel Atom Z2760 processor to assure proper processing power for the full Windows 8 experience. This machine was also introduced with the 2013 Microsoft Office Home & Student suite installed out of the box, this bringing on apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
