SlashGear Week in Review – Week 23 2011

Welcome to this week's edition of the SlashGear Week in Review. With Computex 2011 going on there were all sorts of new gadgets and other gear being unveiled at the show and lots more going on during the week. Monday we learned that the Samsung Galaxy S II had sold 1 million units in Korea. That number is a record and it took the original Galaxy S 70 days to sell a million units. The Asus Eee Pad MeMO 3D went official early in the week with a 7-inch screen and support for 3D with no glasses. The tablet's 7-inch screen has a resolution of 1024 x 600.

Apple OLED ambitions tipped by patent applications?

Apple OLED ambitions tipped by patent applications?

Apple has filed three OLED patent applications, leading to speculation that the company is looking to the low-power, color-rich panels for future devices. Patently Apple due up three patents (20100321305, 20100265187 and 20100265188) which deal with integrating touchscreen layers with OLED displays, and which suggest MacBook-style notebooks, iPad-style tablets and iPhone and iPod-style smartphones and PMPs as potential recipients of the tech. Meanwhile, a throwaway mention of the Apple TV has prompted talk of an Apple OLED HDTV with integrated streaming functionality.

Avi Greengart’s Last Minute, Non-Obvious Holiday Gift Guide 2010

Avi Greengart’s Last Minute, Non-Obvious Holiday Gift Guide 2010

First, a confession. This guide is always "last minute," mostly because I get so busy covering all the new devices launched just in time for the holiday shopping season that I end up starting the holiday gift guide late. Last year it was so late that I gave up and turned it into a Best Products of the Year piece instead. This year I’ve missed Chanukah but I’m still getting in ahead of Christmas, so that’s good. However, I do usually try to make this a "non-obvious" gift guide. SlashGear already has you covered if what you want advice on the best cellphone, camera, Bluetooth headset, or the like. My favorite products this year include several on that list, including Apple’s iPad, Jawbone’s ICON, Mophie’s Juice Pack Air and the 11" MacBook Air. I’d add Amazon’s Kindle and Microsoft’s Kinect (assuming you can find one at retail). But what if you’re looking for…

Ode to the Nano, V to the izzA

Ode to the Nano, V to the izzA

I was once stranded in Amsterdam for more than a week with my iPod nano and only 4 albums of music. I started the week at a Microsoft Mobius event, from which I got to visit Amsterdam coffeeshops with some fairly interesting and important people from Microsoft, Qualcomm and some of my other favorite tech blogs. After that event ended and most of my compatriots went home, I stuck around for a while to try to crash Nokia World, to which I was not actually invited or approved. In between, I had to wander the city and avoid getting into trouble.

Acer Aspire AZ5700-U3112 and AZ3100-U3072 All-In-Ones outed

Acer Aspire AZ5700-U3112 and AZ3100-U3072 All-In-Ones outed

Acer seems to have taken a leaf out of Bang & Olufsen's design book with the aesthetic for their new all-in-ones, with the AMD-based Acer Aspire AZ3100-U3072 and the Intel-based Acer Aspire AZ5700-U3112 offering perhaps the best styling this side of an iMac.  The 21.5-inch AZ3100-U3072 is the cheaper option, with AMD's 2GHz Athlon II 170u CPU, 3GB of memory and a 500GB HDD, while the 23-inch Full HD AZ5700-U3112 gets Intel's 3.2GHz Core i5-650 CPU, 4GB of memory, a 1TB HDD and a touchscreen.

Gateway One ZX6900-01e Review

Gateway One ZX6900-01e Review

As people grow more used to reaching out and stabbing at displays with their fingers, the all-in-one touchscreen PC market keeps expanding. Gateway could almost be considered stalwarts of the segment; their latest model is the Gateway One ZX6900-01e, a 23-inch Full HD desktop packing Intel's latest Core i3 processor. But is it a touch of genius? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.
