TouchPad gets webOS 3.0.4 as backorder slates ship

The death of the HP TouchPad has been a slow and prolonged one. The tablet seems to be in the final death throws right now though. HP is apparently finally shipping out the last batch of the TouchPads right now. Nate over at The Digital Reader reports that he received an email from HP telling him his tablet has shipped. Some folks won't be that lucky though, HP has said it oversold the tablets it had left.

If there's a king of Android ROMs, aka complete replacement of the visible workings of a mobile device in this case, it's CyanogenMod. For those of you that do not know, CyanogenMod is used by thousands of Android users across the earth, it being the most used Android ROM by far, and today the developers behind the project have announced that it's been upgraded to version 7.1. This version continues to closely replicate Android 2.3 Gingerbread, now with a new laundry list of feature updates as well as a short list of new devices it will work with, including, yes indeed, the HP TouchPad we've been waiting so long to modify.

Efforts to get Android running properly on the HP TouchPad continue, with both cores of the tablet's 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor now usable and hardware graphics acceleration supported. The handiwork of the Cyanogenmod team, the new video demo - which you can see after the cut - shows a modified TouchPad running various 3D games as well as playing 720p HD local video and HQ YouTube clips.

I would wager that none of the hard-core tech guys and gals were surprised that the HP TouchPad with webOS failed. I think most of us knew that would happen when we first heard that webOS was coming to a tablet. I never understood why HP though with the WebOS smartphones not doing well that a tablet would do well. If you are the owner of a TouchPad, there is a lot of work on getting the tablet to run Android underway. Early ports like the CyanogenMod could boot, but the touchscreen didn’t function.

Woot Offers TouchPad Buyers $100 and Star Wars Defense

If you're an avid South Park fan like every good god-fearing American in North America and myself are, you remember the episode in which there's a court case that lawyer Johnnie Cochran wins by using the Chewbacca defense, a method in which he speaks about the Star Wars character tied to several factoids about his living situation in order to utterly confuse the jury and ultimately win the case. It appears today that the folks at Woot are pulling a similar hilarious trick, this time using Chewbacca's good friend Lando Calrissian, and in this case offering early adopter purchasers of the HP TouchPad a $99 partial refund for their troubles in order to make them less mad at the fact that they payed full price before the recent fire sale of said tablet.
