Tablets: an Android 2011 Retrospective

Tablets: an Android 2011 Retrospective

When the year 2011 is looked back upon by the Google historians, they'll mark it as the first time they officially made an effort to bring the Android platform to devices with displays larger than handheld smartphones - what we saw, as a result, was everything from the XOOM to the ASUS Transformer Prime. The folks at Google created a version of their mobile operating system Android titled Honeycomb and numbered version 3.0. This operating system began its life in the wild on the Motorola XOOM, a 10.1-inch tablet that by the end of the year would be replaced by the XYBOARD, a tablet which physically in weight and thickness to the iPad 2 - the dominant force in the tablet space throughout the vast majority of this past year.

Toshiba Excite Android tablet gets release date

Toshiba Excite Android tablet gets release date

When the first Toshiba Android tablet was released, it seemed like a really big deal - at one point it was even rumored that they'd be the ones to host the tablet-centric Android 3.0 Honeycomb as a hero - alas that did not happen, and now that the first iteration (call the Toshiba Thrive, just so you know) is both too fat and unwieldily to sell as a top dog, the big T is sending out a new generation called Toshiba Excite. This tablet was revealed a few weeks ago as a contender for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with its dual-core 1.2Ghz Texas Instruments OMAP4 processor and its 10.1-inch display at 1280 x 800 resolution - and today Mobile Syrup relays Toshiba information that it'll be on sale come February 2012.

I have no need for a tablet

I have no need for a tablet

Though your humble narrator may review tablets, smartphones, desktop computers, laptops, and gadgets of all kinds, and would give you a fair look at the load of them, one thing remains true of the first item on that list without fail: at the end of the day, I really could do without a tablet. The same could be said about a desktop computer, but that ship sailed a long time ago if you believe your everyday average tech blogger. Why would I want a machine that I had to leave in one place when I've got this perfectly good portable screen connected to a keyboard right here in front of me? More to the point, why would I want then to remove the keyboard piece of this puzzle when it wasn't causing me any trouble or amount of discomfort in any way in the first place?

Tablets finally undercutting $500 iPad, but will it matter?

As you already may well know, the iPad is not a tablet PC, it is an iPad. Thus is the brilliance of the brand-masters at Apple and thus is massive success the iPad has seen so far. What we've been seeing over the past few months is a welcome change on the part of many manufacturers and carriers trying to sell their tablet computers in the face of a very much iPad-saturated market: price cuts. A whole heck of a lot of price cuts, in fact, with everyone from HTC to Lenovo cutting tablet prices on carriers and in big time tablet-pushing stores like Best Buy.

Toshiba AT200 hands-on [Video]

Toshiba has taken the wraps off of its new Android Honeycomb tablet, the Toshiba AT200, and we just spent some time up-close with the brand new slate here at IFA 2011. Toshiba only had a couple of units on hand at the show, only one of which was functional, but it's the aesthetic that makes this slate particularly stand out. Far thinner and more pleasing to the eye than the Thrive, the AT200 also beats the existing thinnest Honeycomb slate, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
