Apple slashes Samsung’s iPhone 5 involvement says supply chain

Samsung's memory and displays will be absent from the first batch of Apple's new iPhone, insiders claim, after pricing and legal disagreements saw the Cupertino firm slash orders from its long-time rival. Patent fight tensions and arguments over costs have led to a stalemate of sorts, insiders tell Reuters and Bloomberg, though Apple is also believed to be working to reduce its reliance on any one individual company. However, Apple hasn't been able to entirely oust Samsung from its iPhone 5 supply chain: the processor powering the new smartphone will apparently still be produced by the South Korean firm.

If each tech show has an unofficial theme, then IFA 2012's must be Windows 8 tablets. Microsoft's new OS - in both full 8 and pared-back RT forms - has shown up on touchscreen hardware from all of the main manufacturers, each trying slightly different combinations of size, specs and accessories in the hope of standing out from the crowd. Options are great, of course, but are there signs that Microsoft's tablet desperation is rubbing off on its OEMs?

We've officially entered the final hours of August, and in typical SlashGear fashion, we're sending thing off with a bang. Today's IFA adventures didn't produce as much news as the two days before it, but we still have plenty of hands-on posts for you to check out, just like yesterday. We got to check out a couple of Dell's upcoming products today, spending some hands-on time with the Dell XPS Duo 12 and the more traditional Dell XPS 10. Dell wasn't the only one showing off new computers and a tablets today though, as we also have a hands-on with HP ENVY TouchSmart Ultrabook 4, SpectreXT and ENVY x2, along with a hands-on post for the new Toshiba Satellite U920t.

The first of two round-up posts we've got here for the US-based mobile show of the year CTIA is one of devices exclusively, everything you need to know about what was well worth seeing down in New Orleans here in 2012. This year we had a look not only at the devices and accessories that the show had to offer, but hit the attack on social networks as well, with several galleries for your perusal and snapshots throughout our journey so you could take on the trip with us. As for devices, there really wasn't a whole lot of new action coming on from this week specifically, but what was new was fabulous, and what was once only overseas was brought on with a fury.
