Retina Display reference for iPad 3 uncovered in iOS 5 developer code

Retina Display reference for iPad 3 uncovered in iOS 5 developer code

It has been recently reported by Digitimes that their electronics supplier-based contacts state that Apple is currently in the works of prototyping two versions of the third-generation iPad, or iPad 3. The site says the third-gen iPads have been codenamed J1 and J2, and based on code strings from 9 to 5 Mac, it's at least likely that the iPad codenamed J2 mentioned in the report may come with a Retina Display, as well as a dual LED-bar system to power the high-resolution display, which have already graced Apple's iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S models.

iPad 3 Super AMOLED unlikely as backlight suppliers approved

iPad 3 Super AMOLED unlikely as backlight suppliers approved

Despite reports that Apple COO Tim Cook met with Samsung over potentially using Super AMOLED panels in the upcoming iPad 3, the word from the supply chain is that the third-generation iOS slate will continue to use LCD technology. According to DigiTimes' sources, Apple has begun certifying iPad 3 component suppliers, with LED backlights from Radiant Opto-Electronics apparently among those parts to be approved. Since AMOLED does not require a backlight, that certainly suggests LCD will be sticking around for at least another generation.

Samsung 10.1″ 2560 x 1600 tablet panel could be iPad 3′s Retina Display

Samsung 10.1″ 2560 x 1600 tablet panel could be iPad 3′s Retina Display

Samsung has announced a new 10.1-inch, 300dpi PenTile prototype display running at a massive WQXGA 2560 x 1600 resolution, which the company says is headed to commercial tablets later this year. Although offering twice the resolution of most current tablet screens of the same size, Samsung's uses up to 40-percent less power; most interestingly - and of course not mentioned by Samsung itself - is the possibility that this could be the iPad 3's oft-rumored Retina Display.

iPad 2 Review

iPad 2 Review

The iPad shaped the consumer tablet market. Now, just as Android 3.0 Honeycomb slates are rising to the challenge, the iPad 2 is here to move Apple's game on even further. Squeezing a faster processor, boosted graphics and twin cameras into a 33-percent thinner design, yet keeping the same 10hr battery and - perhaps most importantly - the same price, the iPad 2 promises to refine what rivals were still struggling to beat. Is the Apple iPad 2 the best tablet today? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

iPad 2 may underwhelm claims Apple source; iPad 3 due late-2011 to really wow

An supposed Apple employee has poured cold water over the imminent iPad 2 launch, suggesting that tablet fans shouldn't "get your hopes up too high" and that the real magic will be with the third-generation iPad. According to Cult of Mac's anonymous source, the iPad 2 we'll see today is a speed bump rather than a redesign, with Apple's intended innovation being held up by "a number of problems along the way."

iPad 3 this fall tips latest batch of frantic Apple refresh rumors

The iPad 2 isn't even official yet, but already the speculation over the third-generation version of the Apple tablet has begun in earnest. Prompted by Daring Fireball's John Gruber predicting that HP might struggle with the Touchpad because "If my theory is right, they’re not only going to be months behind the iPad 2, but if they slip until late summer, they might bump up against the release of the iPad 3," TechCrunch sources stepped up with the supposedly solid news that there would be two iPad refreshes in 2011: the iPad 2, imminently, and then the iPad 3 this fall.

iPad 3 to get Retina Display: panels too expensive for 2nd-gen slate

iPad 3 to get Retina Display: panels too expensive for 2nd-gen slate

Further talk that the so-called iPad "Retina Display" prototypes - running high-resolution 2048 x 1536 panels - are in fact for the third-generation slate has emerged, with IDC Research lending its weight to the idea of a high-res iPad 3 instead. According to research manager Tom Mainelli, "Our sources say Apple has requested that manufacturers begin work on displays with that resolution for the iPad 3. I don't believe anybody is ready to produce that resolution in volumes at this point. And Apple is going to require huge volumes for the iPad 2."

Archos 97 Titanium HD comes with 2048×1536 resolution

It looks like there's another competitor to take on the Nexus 10 and the iPad, both of which have super high-resolution displays that are unmatched by pretty much every other tablet. However, Archos has a new tablet that looks to take on the displays of both the iPad and Nexus 10. The 97 Titanium HD comes with a 2048x1536 resolution, and while it's not quite up there with the Nexus 10, it's still extremely high-resolution for a tablet.
