Avi Greengart’s Toy Fair 2012

, Feb 19th 2012 Discuss [0]

I have attended and spoken at a lot of trade shows over the years – consumer electronics, telephony, computing, broadcasting, database programming, home theater, whatever SXSW is – but I have always wanted to go to Toy Fair. Even the name of it sounds like fun – who doesn’t like toys? This year I finally found an excuse to go, and it wasn’t to see Star Wars toys. (Well, at least it wasn’t the only reason.) At CES this year, there were tons of connected toys – board games that interact with an iPad, children’s educational tablets, and lots of flying things with iPhone controllers. I covered a few of these in my holiday gift guide, but thought that it would be worth attending Toy Fair 2012 and seeing how deeply connectivity really went in the toy industry. What new gadgets would I find? Are vendors embedding 3G and 4G radios into toys, or just WiFi? Toy Fair agreed, and gave me a press pass.

ThinkGeek iCade 8-Bitty revealed and detailed

, Feb 13th 2012 Discuss [0]

For those of you with a love for the original controller that swept the world with its rectangular simplicity in the original Nintendo Entertainment System, 8-bitty has been released for your mobile gaming enjoyment. This little controller has four buttons instead of the two you've seen in the old controller and has no affiliation with that controller other than its obvious inspirational bits. ArcadeDock Uses IdeaPad Y560 Notebook to Make Half-Sized Arcade Machine

, Oct 14th 2010 Discuss [0]

While ThinkGeek's iCade Arcade Docking Station may have been a clever April Fool's joke, the concept behind the machine was a good one. And it's good to see that the Do-It-Yourself crowd out there is doing their best to make that magic happen again. The difference this time around, though, is that this particular modder was called out by Lenovo to come up with "an idea for fun." That idea happened to be a half-sized arcade machine. iPad Used in a Real Working Arcade Unit

, Jun 28th 2010 Discuss [1]

The iPad is a tablet. And while Apple would have you convinced that it's a magical and revolutionary piece of technology, we're more convinced of its magical aspects when we see dangerously clever people like this create wonderfully amazing items such as this working arcade unit. Unlike others before it, this version is completely functional, and you're able to use the physical controls to manipulate what's on the screen. Read The Full Story

, Apr 2nd 2010 Discuss [3]

Coincidentally published on the same day as we fell for the ThinkGeek iCade, Apple have applied for a patent describing a portable gaming controller into which a touchscreen device - like an iPhone or iPod touch - could dock into.  Apple reckon such a controller could have anything from game-specific controls, like D-pads and joysticks, through microphones and cameras, rumble packs, motion detection or even a second display. iCade iPad arcade cabinet release “a possibility” say ThinkGeek

, Apr 2nd 2010 Discuss [1]

Grumpy old man that I am, ThinkGeek's iCade retro arcade cabinet for the iPad was the only April Fools joke that I found vaguely amusing.  Promising, then, that the retailer describes it as "our most posted, tweeted and blogged about product this April Fools" and suggests that a real-world version is in fact "a possibility."  Geekosystem pestered ThinkGeek about the chance of the iCade - which looks like a desktop arcade cabinet, into which an Apple iPad slots - crossing over from comedy mock-up to legitimate device, and while there are several hurdles (not least Apple themselves) it's definitely being considered. ThinkGeek iCade arcade cabinet for iPad is fake with real promise

, Apr 1st 2010 Discuss [1]

April Fool jokes online are generally tired, unfunny and just plain annoying, but there's usually one decent idea that slips through the net of mediocrity.  ThinkGeek's iCade iPad arcade cabinet is obviously a joke - the "Availability: 80's" pretty much gives it away - but we can see plenty of people loving the concept of a proper arcade controller for some serious retro gaming with their shiny new Apple tablet.
