T-Mobile announces restructuring and more job cuts

T-Mobile CEO Philip Humm issued a memo today, announcing some "difficult decisions" in restructuring the company that will involve more layoffs. The struggling carrier had recently cut 1900 jobs and closed 7 call centers, following its failed AT&T merger. Verizon's proposed purchase of $3.9 billion worth of US wireless spectrum formerly reserved for over-the-air cable broadcasts is not sitting well with competitor T-Mobile, as they've said before. Today T-Mobile CEO Philipp Humm made it clear in no uncertain terms that the company wasn't interested in the bands that Verizon proposed to sell as a concession for its acquisition of prime wireless real estate in the AWS spectrum. FCC approves AT&T spectrum transfer to T-Mobile

The FCC has approved the transfer of AWS spectrum from AT&T to T-Mobile, who celebrated the news this morning with the announcement. The spectrum to be transferred is part of the breakup agreement between the two carriers for their ill-fated merger attempt. AT&T has issued a statement blaming the FCC for the T-Mobile job cuts announced yesterday. T-Mobile will be shutting down 7 call centers and laying off 3,300 employees, although it will be creating 1,400 new positions at the remaining call centers. T-Mobile skips 84Mbps upgrade for LTE future

Last week T-Mobile finally announced its plants to upgrade its network to long-term evolution (LTE) speeds, now that the possibility of being acquired by AT&T is off the table for good. The LTE portions of T-Mobile network won't be online until next year at the earliest, but in the meantime the company had planned to upgrade all of its HSPA+ towers to a mind-boggling 84 megabits per second. Alas, that's no longer the case - due to the intense cost and preparations needed for the LTE network, T-Mobile's "4G" HSPA+ network won't get above 42MBps maximum. Read The Full Story

AT&T has managed to beat out all its rivals in the latest mobile phone customer service survey conducted by Vocalabs, despite being ranked worst by Consumer Reports. According to data collected from the firm's survey, which involved telephone interviews immediately following a customer service call during the last three-month period in 2011, AT&T had the highest percentage of customer satisfaction among the four major US wireless carriers.
