Nokia World to be split into several “intimate” events

, May 23rd 2012 Discuss [0]

Nokia World is typically a big event for the Finnish smartphone manufacturing, a chance to showcase the latest and greatest developments while making lots of noise. Nokia has posted to the Nokia Conversations blog saying that Nokia World will be scaled back. Instead of a big event once a year, there will be several more “intimate” events held over the course of the year instead. Read The Full Story

Nokia Lumia 900 gets hammer and nails stress tested

, May 18th 2012 Discuss [0]

This week a couple of engineers from Tech Craver busted out a hammer, some nails, and their own Nokia Lumia 900 review unit to do some stress tests. While what you're about to see isn't technically as scientifically viable as we'd normally like to see in a hammer-to-smartphone test, we'll accept it - if only because they added what appears to be Stephen Elop calling them on the phone at the end of the video before the video stoppers up. This story has also been picked up by Nokia official Jason Harris of Conversations by Nokia - they're fairly impressed by the whole situation too, to be frank. Read The Full Story

Nokia Carl Zeiss partnership extended

, May 2nd 2012 Discuss [0]

If you want to have the most amazing camera on your smartphone, Nokia may be the place to turn. Unfortunately, for many people, that doesn't trump the user experience, app availability, and platform recognition that make Nokia the less than desirable choice for smartphones, but nevertheless, the Finnish mobile manufacturer has decided to extend its partnership with digital photography giant Carl Zeiss. SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: April 26, 2012

, Apr 26th 2012 Discuss [0]

Happy Thursday, everyone. We're coming up to the end of April, with bright hopes for amazing weather and happiness around the corner. And for one company, that's a pretty poignant analog to make right now - Nintendo. It just posted its first annual loss. But it's seen mostly as a fluke, as the next year will include the Wii U launch, which incidentally, is also in the news: Wii U with Android tipped for launch. Not all the news today was about Nintendo, though. There's still one particular smartphone thar's still making headlines - Galaxy S III guide appears in the wild. Read The Full Story

Former Nokia exec Lee Williams has slammed Nokia CEO Stephen Elop and the choke hold of the Windows Phone in a recent interview when asked about his views on the struggling Finnish handset maker. From accusing Elop of a lack of long-term vision to calling the ditching of Symbian and adoption of Windows Phone bad ideas, Williams doesn't mince words. Read The Full Story

Stephen Elop is a Genius

, Apr 19th 2012 Discuss [0]

It’s easy to hate on Nokia. The company’s ruinous financial results have seen the Finnish firm’s share price hit a fifteen year low; reviewers responded positively to the new Lumia Windows Phone range, but smartphone-savvy customers were still swayed by more established Android and iPhone options. And so it’s easy to hate on CEO Stephen Elop, a cuckoo to some who inveigled his way into Nokia and then sold out the family silver – Symbian, MeeGo, the old guard of loyal execs – from under their nose. As the stock tumbles and the company contracts, though, make no mistake: Elop is no bumbling fool.

Verizon Windows Phone encore teased

, Apr 19th 2012 Discuss [0]

Verizon has reignited talk of a Windows Phone push, with comments by chief financial officer Fran Shammo prompting suggestions that the carrier might take a second try at pushing the Microsoft platform. The Windows Phone namecheck came at the tail-end of the carrier's financial results call earlier today, with Shammo saying that Verizon believes a third ecosystem is particularly important in the smartphone business, beyond merely Android and iPhone. Nokia lost China

, Apr 19th 2012 Discuss [0]

Fans of big numbers should find plenty to excite them in Nokia’s Q1 2012 financial results, but some of the most serious implications come when you factor in those stats the Finns didn’t mention. The headline numbers of a $1.7bn loss and a halving of smartphone sales year-on-year dance around the biggest threat to the company’s future: the market Apple, Google and many others see as their biggest source of potential growth in the decades to come, China, has ditched Nokia.

Nokia sales chief resigns

, Apr 19th 2012 Discuss [0]

Nokia's executive vice president of sales, Colin Giles, has resigned, coming hot on the heels of "greater than expected competitive challenges" leading to appalling Q1 2012 financial results. Giles departure is so that the Nokia Leadership Team member can "be closer to his family" and will prompt a restructuring of the company's sales organization. "Effective immediately, Nokia's four regional senior vice presidents and the lead of sales operations will report directly to Niklas Savander, executive vice president of markets" the company says, in the process "reducing a layer of sales management to ensure greater customer focus and providing senior leaders greater visibility into market dynamics." Nokia admits $1.7bn loss in Q1 2012

, Apr 19th 2012 Discuss [0]

Nokia has announced its Q1 2012 financial results, with a huge €1.34bn ($1.7bn) operating loss despite sales of $7.4bn ($9.7bn) in sales. Smart devices sales more than halved year-on-year as Nokia’s Symbian line lost traction, declining 38-percent from Q4 2011; meanwhile, mobile phones – the bread and butter of Nokia’s bottom line – fell 32-percent year-on-year, and down 24-percent on the previous quarter. “We have faced greater than expected competitive challenges” CEO Stephen Elop admitted, adding that “actual sales results [of Lumia Windows Phones] have been mixed.”

Nokia has just six months to claw its way from collapse

, Apr 12th 2012 Discuss [0]

Nokia has six months to redeem itself with Windows Phone, analysts warn, before it needs to find a "Plan B" other than Microsoft's platform. After dire financial warnings earlier this week, in which Nokia not only confirmed that Symbian device sales were ditching, but that Lumia Windows Phone sales were only a fifth of those Symbian volumes, the outlook for the company is grim. However, while many suggest Nokia isn't, in fact, to blame for the most significant shortcomings in its device strategy, that won't save it from failure if it doesn't turn things around.
