While the device has been made available in a more general sense from Sony before, this T-Mobile edition has just appeared available today.

Sony rolls out Android 5.1.1 for Xperia Z3, Z2 devices

It has mostly been bad news lately for Sony fans, with the almost scandalous Xperia Z4 and the contentious Xperia M4 Aqua. But now there's a reason for them to cheer up, especially if they own one or a few of Sony's previous smartphones. The manufacturer has just started the distribution of an Android 5.1.1 update and it will be hitting the whole range of Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 devices, both smartphones and tablets, many of whom are still living in an Android 4.4 Kit Kat world.

Sony stops selling the Xperia Z3 Compact in the US

Sony stops selling the Xperia Z3 Compact in the US

Sony is doing it again, leaving fans and industry observers scratching their heads in bewilderment. Although T-Mobile's removal of the Xperia Z3 last April turn to out to be a false alarm, the unlocked Xperia Z3 Compact might not be so lucky. Sony has just put its last mini flagship under the discontinued section of its online store with nary an explanation nor a clue. Normally, discontinuing products heralds the arrival of a successor. But the way Sony has been acting these days, it's getting hard to tell what the Japanese OEM is really up to.

Sony event in India could be for the Xperia Z4

Sony event in India could be for the Xperia Z4

If the stars align, we might actually get to see the Sony Xperia Z4, as it is known in Japan, head outside the Land of the Rising Sun, contrary to earlier assurances that the weird device is a Japan-only affair. Sony sent out invitations in India for an event dated May 26, and although the aquatic theme of the invite suggests the Xperia M4 Aqua, there are whispers that it might actually be intended for the start of the global launch of the Xperia Z4 instead.

Sony to brand Xperia Z4 as Xperia Z3+ in other markets

Sony to brand Xperia Z4 as Xperia Z3+ in other markets

It seems that Sony might have become a bit unhinged in its efforts to hunker down on its somewhat floundering mobile business. First, it rather quietly unveiled the Xperia Z4, which may or may not be limited to the Japanese market. And then there are whispers of an Xperia P2 that looks terribly similar except in a few areas. Now there is word that Sony might actually sell the Xperia Z4 in other markets as well, but quite appropriately name it as the Xperia Z3+ instead.

Xperia Z4 appears on GFXBench with unsurprising specs

Xperia Z4 appears on GFXBench with unsurprising specs

Given the existence of the Xperia Z4 Tablet, there is very little doubt that an Xperia Z4 will soon be making its way to our hands. Indeed, it's more a question of when rather than if, as Sony's mobile division really can't afford to skip a flagship generation. And while we do expect that smartphone to land soon, we can't be help wonder what it would be like, since, rather surprisingly, the smartphone hasn't been leaked to death yet unlike its predecessors. A GFXBench entry gives a bit of a clue, but, at least based on these specs, the Xperia Z4 might not have any surprises either.

Sony: Android Lollipop will be on all Xperia Z devices

Sony: Android Lollipop will be on all Xperia Z devices

Though not easy to come by stateside, the Sony Xperia Z lineup makes a strong showing elsewhere in the world. Since re-dedicating themselves to mobile, Sony has made strides in improving the overall experience on their handsets. An impressive 20.7MP camera adorns the newest Xperia Z flagships, and their Android overlay is slight and appealing. Updates are sometimes the foil of an Android OEM and user, though, as the company struggles to decide how to support legacy handsets. Sony isn’t struggling with that decision at all, and will update their entire Xperia Z lineup.
