Sony Tablet S Review

, Aug 31st 2011 Discuss [24]

It’s been some time since Sony had a tablet on the market. Times have changed since the VAIO UX’s day, though, and where once tablets were niche devices, now they’re making headway into our living rooms. The Sony Tablet S is the first model of the company’s new strategy, packing Android Honeycomb into a hardware design that’s a little more interesting than many rivals have managed. Late to the game against the iPad, though, has the Tablet S’ tardiness undermined its potential? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

Sony aims for No.2 spot in tablets; considering 3D slate

, Jan 11th 2011 Discuss [0]

Sony doesn't actually have a tablet on the market, nor did the company show one at CES 2011 last week, but it's not letting those minor issues stand in the way of its slate ambitions. According to Sony computer division chief Kunimasa Suzuki, the company is aiming to be the number two in tablets - behind Apple's iPad at number one - in just a year's time. Read The Full Story

Sony UX UMPC gets massive DIY upgrade: CPU, 3G, GPS, TV & more

, Oct 13th 2010 Discuss [0]

Sony's UX-series of UMPCs may not be in production any more, but they're still like catnip to modders.  After the beastly upgrades applied to one UX490 late last year, now here's another which has seen the stock CPU switched out and a 3G modem squeezed inside, together with GPS, a TV tuner and a USB hub. Sony VAIO Ultra Mobile device “coming soon”

, Apr 28th 2010 Discuss [0]

Sony Japan have kicked off a teaser campaign for a "VAIO New Ultra Mobile" that's apparently imminently ready for announcement.  No details on the device itself are given, though there's a cryptic paperclip included on the teaser banner that some are suggesting might be a reference to clipping papers in a tablet-style manner, or alternatively might represent some sort of multi-folding device. Sony UX490 UMPC hugely modded: CPU switched, 3G injected, quad-OS

, Nov 23rd 2009 Discuss [1]

We've covered a few modded Sony VAIO UX-series UMPCs over the years, but it's rare to see all the headline tweaks combined into one machine.  Happily one member of the Micro PC Talk forums has done just that, taking a humble 2007 UX490 and not only switching out its SSD, WiFi and other basic components, but completely replacing the standard CPU (which is soldered into place) for a faster version. DIY wearable computer with head-up display

, Jul 24th 2009 Discuss [2]

Augmented reality - integrating data from computer and internet sources with everyday life - is showing up more and more lately, as cellphones learn to geotag landmarks and webcams are coaxed into spotting special ID glyphs, but we're still a way off from a true mainstream-commercial head-up display.  MicroPCTalk forum member fiveseven808 decided to take matters into his own hands, and hacked together a wearable computer with the eyepiece from a Myvu Crystal, a Sony UMPC and a Motorola iDEN i425 for cheap, always-on connectivity. Sony VAIO UX390 UMPC gets OS X 10.5.7 [Video]

, May 22nd 2009 Discuss [0]

Hackintosh netbooks are nothing new, these days, and so the more extreme OS X tweakers move on to more esoteric hardware.  We've already seen Sony's VAIO UX-series UMPC running Apple's OS, but Micro PC Talk user perrin21 has a particularly slick setup: a subtly modified Sony VAIO UX 390 running OS X 10.5.7 as though it just stepped off a Cupertino production line. Sony UX UMPC modded with Core 2 Duo U7600: Extreme soldering skills

, Aug 29th 2008 Discuss [0]

Sony's VAIO UX is a slick little UMPC, but it's overdue a processor upgrade.  Micro PC Talk forum member Anh Nguyen couldn't be bothered waiting for Sony to do the honours, so he cracked open his UX280P, desoldered the 1.2GHz Core Solo U1400 chip from the mainboard and replaced it with an Intel Core 2 Duo U7600. Sony VAIO UX490

Sony will be releasing their latest addition to their VAIO UX line here in the US soon. The updates include Vista Business and a new Intel Core 2 Solo processor. Other than that you will be hit with 48GB of SSD storage, which is probably where most of the $2500 price tag comes from, but should make the battery life better than HDD based models. The new processor operates at 1.2GHz which if I recollect right means you also get a bit of a speed boost. Read The Full Story
