Xbox 720 prototype secrets leak: TV, DVR, streaming, AR and more

Xbox 720 prototype secrets leak: TV, DVR, streaming, AR and more

An Xbox TV, a console piggy-backing on your cable box, DVR functionality, streaming gaming, and augmented reality have all been topics of Microsoft development for the next-gen "Xbox 720", sources claim, though how much of the prototype tech will make it to the eventual hardware is still unclear. Microsoft has been working on multiple possibilities for embedding the new Xbox further into the living room, multiple insiders whispered to the WSJ, as it attempts to challenge not only Sony's PlayStation 4 but the rising star of smartphone and tablet gaming. Still, wariness about potentially frustrating gamers with laggy play, or content and entertainment partners, has apparently forced Microsoft to temper its console ambitions.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: July 31, 2012

The Sun may be setting on the final day of July, but it's also setting on the second day of the patent trial between Apple and Samsung. Today Apple gave its opening arguments while successfully getting a Google employee off the jury. Apple's lead attorney seemed to think that Samsung would be taking a "devil made me do it" approach to its defense, while the Galaxy S manufacturer (which has a lot at stake in this trial) instead said that the iPhone was "inspiring to everyone." Though it initially seemed that this trial would be nothing but boring patent talk, it now appears that it will be quite entertaining, so long as Apple and Samsung continue taking swings at one another like they did today.

Samsung demands Apple legal team be disqualified over insider knowledge fears

The legal furore between Apple and Samsung has taken another bizarre turn, with the Korean company demanding that some - or potentially all - of Apple's outside legal team be dismissed over conflict of interest. According to Samsung's newest motion, FOSSpatents reports, the law firm Bridges & Mavrakakis which Apple has retained was co-founded by someone who previously represented Samsung while at a previous firm, along with several of the other lawyers on the team. The company alleges that the firm now has "privileged and confidential" knowledge of Samsung which it could well use in shaping Apple's legal case.

Apple and Samsung execs in secret talks over copy claims

The escalating legal spat between Apple and Samsung has long prompted astonishment among industry watchers, given the two companies are so inter-dependent on each others' business. Now, its been confirmed that - while Apple's lawyers decry Samsung as an arch "copyist" and Samsung argues that the design language it's accused of mimicking may only be as long-lived as a single generation or two of Apple hardware - high level executives from the firms are simultaneously holding secret talks.
