Sony PSP Go! gets official at E3

Sony have officially announced the PSP Go!, and as expected it's the smaller, entirely-digital sibling to the PSP-3000.  Rocking a sliding form-factor with a 3.8-inch LCD display, 16GB of onboard memory, WiFi and Bluetooth and a M2 Memory Stick Micro slot, the PSP Go! drops the UMD slot from previous versions and as such is 50-percent smaller than the original PSP and 40-percent lighter.

Sony blames pricing for PSP Go shortcomings

Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai has blamed pricing for the slow sales of the PSP Go, telling MCV UK that the digital-only handheld suffered by virtue of being too different from the traditional PSP.  According to Hirai, "because of the cost reductions we’ve been able to do over the years, the traditional PSP has benefited. But the PSPgo is a completely different design, so the cost trend is different."

I mentioned yesterday that some retailers in the UK were already slashing the price of the PSPgo to lure more customers in to purchase. With price cuts being offered after less than a full week on the market, it would seem the PSPgo wasn't selling well in the UK. Apparently things are going much better for Sony in America with reports of sales for PSPs growing by 300%.

Sony talk “Snackable” mini-games for PSP and PSP Go

Sony have revealed plans for "snackable" titles that gamers could download to their PSP Go in less than a minute, taking on Apple's iPhone and iPod touch in the process.  Speaking at a closed-doors event at E3 last month, Sony's head of developer relations Zeno Colaço told Develop that the company envisages the move appealing to non-traditional gamers familiar with micro-downloads.

Sony are preparing to announce the latest version of their handheld gaming system at E3 in a few days time, claims a trusted source, but will wait until August or September to launch their slimline PS3.  According to the tipster - whom Ars Technica describe as having a 100-percent success rate for previous leaks - Sony's UMD-free PSP Go will take the headlines at E3, but the company wants to shift more existing PlayStation 3 stock before announcing the new model.
