Sony PlayStation Eye to get facial recognition

Sony PlayStation Eye to get facial recognition

Sony have revealed plans to add facial recognition capabilities to their PlayStation Eye webcam, potentially stealing part of Microsoft's Project Natal thunder.  According to Kish Hirani, Sony Europe's head of developer services, the functionality will soon be added to the existing hardware, with developer libraries available for games studios so that they don't need to exert effort specifically coding for the new system.

Xbox set to get Wii-like with motion control

Xbox set to get Wii-like with motion control

Well, not exactly Wii-like. If a leaked image is to be believed, Microsoft has a new motion controlling system in the works to compete against what the Nintendo Wii is offering. However, this isn't set up like the Wii in that you can wave around a remote and the sensor will pick up the motion. Rather, the Xbox system simply detects your body's movements and interprets them on the screen.

Sony gaming patent suggests motion-sensitive Transformer controller

Sony gaming patent suggests motion-sensitive Transformer controller

It looks a little like a tool to remove the head from your favorite miserable robot, but this is actually a diagram from one of Sony's latest game controller patents.  The as-yet unnamed controller takes the accelerometer and LED-based tracking system of the Wiimote and adds ultrasonics to gauge its absolute position relative to your TV (via the PSEye microphone array) and other controllers.

Sony releases new PlayStation 3 stuff in Japan

Sony releases new PlayStation 3 stuff in Japan

First off, and least important, they get the new 40GB PS3 model. Now for the good stuff, a ceramic white PS3 with matching controller and Dual Shock 3 controllers.

I think the 40GB will be the one available in white and the matching controller will be a regular SIXAXIS but it will be the same white. However Sony is also looking to phase out the 60GB and 20GB models, so they are bundling them with Spiderman 3 for the holidays, the 40GB also gets this bundle.

Sony denies rumble feature in new SIXAXIS

I'm sure that plenty of you out there have a PS3, if so, I doubt that you've missed the fact that your controller doth not rumble. It has been speculated for some time that Sony is putting the rumble in a new iteration of the SIXAXIS, but sadly Sony has come forward to deny this.

DualShock 4 in stores early: non-PS4 details emerge

It would appear that one of the most advanced Bluetooth controllers on the market this year has hit some stores early: this is the PS4 DualShock 4, and it's been spotted at more than one store Up North. According to reports from DualShockers' varied collection of Tweets, at least seven individual customers have been allowed to purchase and take their DualShock 4 controllers home here in October. The actual release date for the PlayStation 4 itself is November 15th or the 29th depending on which side of the sea you live on, all in 2013.

Xbox 720 prototype secrets leak: TV, DVR, streaming, AR and more

An Xbox TV, a console piggy-backing on your cable box, DVR functionality, streaming gaming, and augmented reality have all been topics of Microsoft development for the next-gen "Xbox 720", sources claim, though how much of the prototype tech will make it to the eventual hardware is still unclear. Microsoft has been working on multiple possibilities for embedding the new Xbox further into the living room, multiple insiders whispered to the WSJ, as it attempts to challenge not only Sony's PlayStation 4 but the rising star of smartphone and tablet gaming. Still, wariness about potentially frustrating gamers with laggy play, or content and entertainment partners, has apparently forced Microsoft to temper its console ambitions.
