Sony axes OLED TV business

Sony has axed its home OLED TV plans, ceasing production of domestic-focused sets using the organic light-emitting diode technology, and focusing on LCD panels moving forward. The news - coming as both Samsung and LG prepare to unveil OLED HDTVs at CES 2012 this week - is the latest stage in Sony's huge overhaul of its ailing home entertainment business, Yomiuri reports, short-comings of which are expected to contribute to $1.15bn in losses in the most recent financial quarter. LG Display to Showcase 31-Inch OLED TV at IFA 2010

Despite the fact that OLED technology in TVs is ridiculously expensive right now, that doesn't seem to want to stop companies from manufacturing them. After all, they are a great showcase of the technology. And, if anything else, they're fantastic to stare at. But LG's looking to go big this year at the IFA show, set to kick off next month. They're apparently going to bring the largest OLED TV to market (outside of the one Samsung showed off, that was also 31-inches, at CES a couple of years ago -- but that they never released for customer purchase), and they plan on showing it off at this year's trade show. LG reveal 15-inch OLED TV to cost $2.5k-$3k

LG have confirmed that their 15-inch OLED TV will be priced at between $2,500 and $3,000 when it launches in Korea this November.  A senior executive from the company has told OLED-Info that, while the flat-panel's final price is yet to be decided, it will be in the same bracket as the existing Sony XEL-1 OLED TV. On Sunday, LG announced that they are going ahead and releasing their previously planned 15-inch AMOLED television, and sooner than we could have hoped. If September wasn't big enough already, LG wants to wiggle in and make sure that you get to watch "your Zune HD" via a great looking, and brilliant display. LG pick Kodak OLED tech for future devices

LG and Kodak have signed a deal that will see the latter's OLED technology used in upcoming LG products, including TVs, cellphone displays and digital photo frames.  The first LG devices using Kodak OLED systems are expected to reach the market by the end of 2009, according to Andrew Sculley, GM and VP of Kodak's Display Group. Update: Kodak have clarified that the deal was in fact signed in 2008, and that the claim of commercial products "by the end of the year" is unconfirmed. Read The Full Story

Sony 9.9mm ZX1 1080p LCD HDTV hits UK on Thursday

Sony's achingly slim ZX1 HDTV - which, at 9.9mm, is being called the world's thinnest production LCD TV - will go on sale in the UK from tomorrow.  The screen, which boasts full 1080p resolution, 3,000:1 contrast ratio and 100Hz refresh rate, will be available in three sizes - 42, 46 and 52-inches - and relies on side-mounted backlighting LEDs for its skinniness. Having received "hundreds" of pre-orders, Sony are finally bringing the BRAVIA XEL-1 TV to the UK, complete with its super-bright, super-colorful 11-inch OLED display.  Never ones to look a gift horse in the mouth (or at least not without ransacking its wallet), Sony are making the most of the interest: by charging around twice what the XEL-1 costs in the US. The paper-thin 0.3mm Sony’s OLED is not new to US, it was displayed back in April at Japan. I’m sure the OLED fans can’t wait to see what Sony has to offer in CEATEC 2008. Sony OLED XEL-1 goes wireless, but still small

When the diminutives Sony OLED XEL-1 hit US stores early this year, it was selling for $2,500. I couldn’t imagine one would spend $227 per inch for an 11-inch screen. Yes, it was the first consumer OLED to hit production, which has a 100k:1 contrast ratio and an extremely thin profile of 3mm but honestly, it wasn’t about the price, it’s just too darn small. Matsushita promise 40-inch OLED HDTVs on-sale by 2011

Matsushita has stuck its large-size display neck on the line and announced it intends to be selling 40-inch OLED HDTVs by 2011.  As a result it has spent an estimated $930m on an OLED panel mass production plant based in Himeji, Japan; that should begin producing panels in 2010, based on the findings from a different, prototype production line ramping up early next year that will produce 20-inch and larger OLEDs. AMOLED nozzle-printing method tipped to reduce next-gen panel costs

DuPont and Dainippon Screen have announced a partnership deal to develop the next generation of AMOLED (active matrix organic light-emitting diode) display panels. The collaboration will see the latter's unique nozzle-printing technology, in which AMOLED panels are printed at high-speed, used with the former's small molecule-based OLED solution materials and proprietary process technology. Eventually, they aim to reduce production costs so that AMOLED manufacture is competitive with current LCD plants. Read The Full Story

This week’s highlight has been the SlashGear team knuckling down to cover HTC’s London launch of the Touch Diamond smartphone.  Our hands-on video of the Windows Mobile 6.1 device is pulling in some serious views, so if the thought of a 3G iPhone is leaving you cold then you need to be checking out the competition.

Meanwhile, budget ultraportables continued their onslaught, with pre-order pricing for both MSI’s Wind and HP’s XP version of the 2133 Mini-Note announced.  ASUS hasn’t been letting the grass grow under them either, confirming that the Eee PC 900 will hit the US on May 12th.  Slightly bigger, word of Dell’s upcoming Inspiron 1435, 1535 and 1735 ranges leaked, bringing with them some of the XPS’ specs including optional 3G and Blu-ray.
