Why Nintendo Won’t Determine Gaming’s Future

, Apr 14th 2012 Discuss [0]

There’s no question Nintendo has made a huge impact on the gaming industry. Over the last couple of decades, Nintendo has been a change agent in the gaming space, prompting companies to look to the future when developing games or hardware.

Remember Super Mario 64? It was the first time that we saw Mario in all of his 3D glory and the first time, for sure, that we realized how fun 3D platforming could be. The Nintendo Entertainment System and the Super NES forced other companies to invent new ideas just to keep up. Even the Nintendo Wii, which was first to deliver fun motion-gaming, has set off a craze that might never be stopped.

Sony patent surfaces with odd tablet/Wii U style controller art

, Feb 7th 2012 Discuss [5]

If you think back when the current consoles like the Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3 hit the market, Sony was left playing catch-up and tacked on a rarely used motion control feature of the PS3 to try and match what the Wii had. If the sketches that are included new Sony patent that surfaced are any indication, Sony isn't ready to let the new Wii U rocking controllers with little LCD screens get the better of it this time around. The Sony patent art is very odd; it shows something that looks more like a tablet or even an eReader then a Wii U controller. Read The Full Story

Why Microsoft’s Kinect Is the Next Big Thing In Gaming

, Feb 4th 2012 Discuss [39]

As I’ve said numerous times on these pages before, I’m deeply concerned by motion gaming. I think it’s holding the gaming business back and helps to make the space seem “gimmicky” — something I thought we were trying to move away from.

My issues with motion gaming have prompted me to turn my back on the Wii. In fact, I haven’t even seen my Wii in well over a year, since it’s been sitting in my closet with the rest of the obsolete and boring consoles I’ve bought over the years.

CES 2012 Smart TV Round-Up

, Jan 12th 2012 Discuss [1]

If ultrabooks and smartphones led the charge for your credit card in mobile gadgetry at CES 2012 this week, Smart TV did the same for living room scale tech. Google TV made its new strike on the market, having rallied for a second scuffle after its embarrassing first-gen flop, while homegrown smart TV systems did their level best to compete. All that was wrapped up with oversized LCD and plasma panels or in slick set-top boxes, with the promise of a world of video-on-demand, cloud-gaming and more just waiting at the end of your broadband pipe. Confusing times, perhaps, but not if you head on through to the SlashGear Smart TV round-up!

Sony: No PS4 reveal in 2012

, Jan 11th 2012 Discuss [1]

Rumors of a new Sony console to be demonstrated at E3 2012 in June have been denied by Sony this week, company gaming chief Kaz Hirai revealing there are no plans to show a new model at the show. Hirai, who has also said that the PS3 is only halfway through its expected 10 year lifespan, suggested that "there is no reason" to depart from that decade-long plan for the existing PlayStation, the WSJ reports, despite speculations on shuffling from within Microsoft's Xbox division. , Oct 28th 2011 Discuss [2]

Nintendo has warned that gamers shouldn't expect to see the Wii U any time soon, with president Satoru Iwata confirming that the final version of the next-gen console isn't expected to go on show until E3 in June next year. "Based on the bitter experiences we have had with the Nintendo 3DS, we are making every effort to prepare so that the Wii U will not stumble during its launch" Iwata said following the company's dreary last-quarter financial results. What Console Could You Not Live Without?

, Sep 29th 2011 Discuss [47]

Over the weekend, I was getting ready to play Gears of War 3 on my Xbox 360, and looked at my selection of game consoles, including the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii, in addition to Microsoft’s hardware. After thinking about all the benefits of those devices, I asked myself a simple question: “which one of those could I simply not live without?”

Microsoft is the Gaming Business’ New King

, Sep 15th 2011 Discuss [35]

When I look around the gaming industry right now, it’s tough to find any single company that really “gets” it. Nintendo has the Wii, which was performing well for quite some time, but that device’s popularity has started to wane. And the 3DS has pretty much disappointed everyone from Nintendo’s CEO Satoru Iwata to his company’s most ardent supporters.

The $249 PS3 is now the Best Deal in the Business

, Aug 18th 2011 Discuss [55]

Sony could very well have made its best decision in years by dropping the price of its PlayStation 3 console $50 earlier this week. Now, consumers can get their hands on the 160GB model for $249 or the 320GB option for $299. And in the process, the company, which also announced a Europe-only PSP, called the E-1000 for £99, has put the onus on Microsoft to respond with a price cut of its own to match its chief competitor.

Sony is experimenting with virtual reality games using head-mounted display

, Jul 19th 2011 Discuss [6]

I haven't heard or thought of virtual reality in a long time now. I remember back years ago, I tried out a set of virtual reality goggles for computer gamers and they sucked so bad it really turned me off from the tech. With 3D here now I really thought VR was dead. Apparently, Sony thinks differently and is at work on some software that uses VR glasses. Read The Full Story

Sony Must Announce the PlayStation 4 ASAP

Earlier this week, reports surfaced suggesting Sony would be launching the PlayStation 4 next year. Almost immediately, Sony fans jumped for joy at the news, while Microsoft fans scoffed at the idea. And along the way, Sony hasn’t said for sure what might happen.

Even so, I’m here to tell you (and Sony) that the PlayStation 4 should launch as early as possible next year.
