The Best of CES 2012

, Jan 14th 2012 Discuss [4]

Welcome to our massive “best-of” wrap-up for CES 2012, complete with everything from smartphones to PCs and headphones and back, topped off with our own “most used gear” section for the curious. What you’ll find is that though there were more exhibitors, attendees, and media attention payed to the show than ever before, the overall result was a lot of the same gear re-hashed with a few new specifications. Pay special close attention to the conclusion of this post for a bit of a whopper if you’re a big fan of the largest show of the year here in the United States.

Sony Ericsson has denied reports that it confirmed the 2011 XPERIA Android range would all get updated to Ice Cream Sandwich, Google’s next-gen version of the OS expected to be released in October or November. According to SoMobile, a UK spokesperson told them that current-gen XPERIA devices would get Android 4.0; however, Sony Ericsson’s press team says that no such decision has been made.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA mini pro Review

, Sep 6th 2011 Discuss [4]

Take a cursory glance at the smartphone market and you’d be forgiven for assuming bigger always means better. Android smartphones are already available with vast screens, rumors suggest the iPhone 5 will introduce a larger display, and Windows Phone has just seen its first uber-panel with the 4.7-inch HTC Titan. Not everyone wants to fill their pocket with handset, however, and for them the Sony Ericsson XPERIA mini pro could tick more than a few boxes. Compact and yet still offering a full physical keyboard, Sony Ericsson’s dinky device reckons it offers the best of both worlds, but can it live up to the billing? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

Sony Ericsson dates XPERIA X10 Gingebread update, teases with video demo

, Jun 20th 2011 Discuss [0]

Sony Ericsson has confirmed that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the XPERIA X10 is scheduled to arrive in early August, though not everybody with the handset will get the new ROM. Those with generic trade models - i.e. sold unlocked and SIM-free - will get the update first (you can see Sony Ericsson's demo of Gingerbread on the X10 after the cut), but only select operator-supplied X10 variants will get it after that. Sony Ericsson XPERIA mini and mini pro get official

, May 5th 2011 Discuss [2]

Sony Ericsson has announced the XPERIA mini and the mini pro, apparently the smallest HD smartphones in the world. The Android 2.3 Gingerbread handsets can shoot 720p HD video, and use Sony's BRAVIA engine along with Sony Ericsson's custom UI. The XPERIA mini is touch-only, but the mini pro has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Read The Full Story

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc Review

, Apr 25th 2011 Discuss [9]

Sony Ericsson’s 2010 Android range may have started promisingly, but software headaches undermined solid hardware and left many early-adopters with a low opinion of the company. 2011 is something of a relaunch for Sony Ericsson, then, with the XPERIA Play doing its level best to deliver the mobile PlayStation platform we’ve been expecting for years, and now the XPERIA Arc hoping to bring some of Sony’s living room expertise to your pocket. Is the Arc the best Sony Ericsson handset to-date, and if so is it good enough to overshadow the competition? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

Smartphone Screens: How Big is Too Big?

, Apr 3rd 2011 Discuss [94]

I head up the Consumer Devices group at Current Analysis, where we have two complementary products: data – we track product pricing, availability, and specs – and analysis – our assessment on how competitive various products and initiatives are. I recently had a client ask a question that crossed both: how many smartphones today have super-sized screens, and how big is too big? (I warned them that the answer would make a great SlashGear column.)

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play Review

, Mar 31st 2011 Discuss [22]

Frankly, it’s a surprise it’s taken them this long. The idea of a PlayStation phone hasn’t been so much a persistent rumor as it has a cellular cloud hanging over both Sony and Sony Ericsson. It overshadowed the launch of the PSP Go and has been responsible for untold speculation about terse relations between the divisions. Throw in more pre-announce leaks than average, and the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play has quite the reputation to live up to. Can the first gaming-centric Android smartphone deliver both the polished day-to-day experience we now expect, and live up to the PlayStation branding? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

Sony Ericsson has changed its mind on XPERIA X10 updates, and announced that it will indeed be releasing Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread for the smartphone.
