Recognizr gives Android face-recognition skills [Video]

, Feb 25th 2010 Discuss [0]

One of Sony Ericsson's headline features for the XPERIA X10 is facial recognition, with the phone able to identify individuals in photos and link them to their entry in the address book.  Developers The Astonishing Tribe look to be planning something similar for all Android devices, though; Recognizr, currently a proof-of-concept, can spot people from a live camera view and surround them with links to their various connected content, whether that be a local Contacts entry or their online social networking profiles and blogs. Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 hands-on

, Feb 16th 2010 Discuss [0]

MWC 2010 isn't our first encounter with the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10; after all, we joined the company in London back in November 2009 for the official launch of the Android smartphone.  What it is, though, is a good chance to catch up with a very much more optimized build.  The XPERIA X10's debut was marred by jittery performance and sluggishness in the company's custom apps, Mediascape and Timescape, leaving us somewhat unconvinced about the handset.  Happily - and handily, since Sony Ericsson tell us the X10 is mere weeks from launch in the UK - the current build is far more impressive. Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro hands-on

, Feb 16th 2010 Discuss [3]

Sony Ericsson's Vivaz pro potentially has a tough sell on its hands: its XPERIA siblings, like the X10 and the new X10 mini and X10 mini pro, have an arguably more eye-catching OS in Android, and a more impressive UI in the form of Timescape and Mediascape.  In contrast, the Vivaz and Vivaz pro both get S60, albeit with a little of Sony Ericsson's own tweaking.  Hands-on, both devices feel lighter than they look, though on the downside we weren't entirely convinced by the quality of the plastics. Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini & mini pro hands-on

, Feb 16th 2010 Discuss [0]

Biggest surprise about the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini and X10 mini pro?  Just how small the new Android smartphones are in the plastic.  We grabbed some hands-on time with both earlier today, and while they don't have the original X10's eye-catching 4-inch display they go some way to making up for it with extreme pocket-friendliness.  Check out the live photos and video demos after the cut. Android 2.0.1 dual-boot XPERIA X1 hack [Video]

, Feb 3rd 2010 Discuss [1]

Over at xda-developers they're pathologically addicted to getting software to run on devices it was never intended to, and fed up of waiting for Sony Ericsson's debut into the Android ecosystem, the XPERIA X10, they've focused instead on getting Android onto an earlier phone.  Normally the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is found playing nicely with Windows Mobile, but you can now dual-boot it with that and Android 2.0.1. HTC Bravo caught on camera en route to T-Mobile?

, Jan 20th 2010 Discuss [2]

Out of all the smartphones on HTC's leaked 2010 roadmap, undoubtedly the most interesting was the HTC Bravo.  A device strikingly similar to the Google Nexus One, complete with HSDPA/HSUPA connectivity, a 3.7-inch touchscreen and a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, the Bravo also throws HTC's well-esteemed Sense UI into the mixture.  Now one of the first images of the Bravo in the wild has turned up. With it comes the first tidbit of carrier information we've heard; according to Omio the Bravo (which may get a different name by the time it arrives on shelves) is headed to T-Mobile.  They reckon it'll land from free on contracts £35 ($57) or above, presumably with a two-year agreement.
