Sony has cancelled plans to upgrade the Xperia PLAY gaming smartphone to Ice Cream Sandwich, justifying its decision with negative feedback from carriers, developers and owners of the test Android 4.0 build. "After extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners," Sony said in a statement today, "we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich."

Sony’s new ICS update timeline: roll out begins mid-April
Sony let the world know back in December that its entire 2011 line of Android smartphones would be receiving an update to Ice Cream Sandwich. At the time, they said we could expect updates to land at the end of March or beginning of April. The company has now taken to its blog to let the world know that the ICS updates will be rolling out starting from the middle of April. A minor delay, but not long to go now.

Sony SmartWatch Review
Sony‘s first attempt at a smart watch, the Sony Ericsson LiveView, promised plenty and delivered disappointment, and so the company has returned with the Sony SmartWatch. The concept is the same – put a tiny sub-display on your wrist, so that you can monitor your phone’s notifications from afar – but the hardware has received a welcome boost, with an OLED touchscreen promising more intuitive navigation. Sony Xperia S Review
The Sony Xperia S is something of a smartphone stepchild: the first smartphone to bear Sony’s sole brand in recent years, but developed under the loving care of the Sony Ericsson partnership the Japanese company bought itself out of. It certainly ticks a lot of the right boxes – 720p HD display, high-resolution 12.1-megapixel camera and some reasonably distinctive design – but we’ve seen our fair share of Android handsets over-promise and under-deliver. Sony PlayStation Suite SDK open beta drops April
Sony's PlayStation Suite SDK will be released as an open beta in April 2012, the company has confirmed, allowing developers to create games and content for the PS Vita, as well as PlayStation Certified phones and tablets. Released in closed beta back in November, though only in the US, UK and Japan, the new open beta will broaden support to a greater number of countries. The full version of the SDK, meanwhile, will follow on later in 2012, with an annual fee of $99 for distribution through the PlayStation Store.

Sony's mini-Xperia has leaked, the dinky 3.5-inch dual-core previously known as the ST25i but tipped to launch as the Sony Xperia U. Running Android on a 1GHz processor with a WVGA display and 5-megapixel camera, the Xperia U doesn't exactly deliver hyperbole like the Xperia S it's shown next to in the photos HDBlog unearthed, but could be a welcome alternative for those that don't want to give over an entire pocket to an oversized smartphone.

Sony’s Four-Screen Strategy Needs Vita OS
Changes are afoot at Sony: new CEO, new PS Vita on the market, and a new opportunity to demonstrate the company can deliver on its “four-screen” strategy of convergence. Until now, that strategy has been a vague ambition to sell users a Sony TV, phone, tablet and PC. Now, though, with the PS Vita finally reaching US buyers, part of Sony’s overall gameplan is starting to become clear. Vita OS is the “thin edge of the wedge” on gaming hardware, Yoshio Matsumoto, director of business at SCE, confirmed last week. Meanwhile, Sony Ericsson is no more, and Sony has sole control of the rudder: the company promised nothing but smartphones for 2012, but that doesn’t mean Sony won’t sacrifice Android in favor of a platform – and an ecosystem – that it alone controls.
