When Less is Sold as More

I recently dined at a fancy restaurant here in NY with some friends and was surprised at the rather miniscule portions that were served. “Less is more” I was told and in this case it proved to be correct. Less was definitely more if we were talking about price. In terms of filling, however, less was most certainly, well, less. Fortunately there are also cheap, late night burger joints where more is just more.

This experience comes to mind as I’m looking at a new phone from Sony Ericsson called the Xperia Pureness, that takes a page from the “less is more” playbook. The phone sells in the US at places such as Saks Fifth Avenue for $990 US. Yes, that’s not a typo, this is a $990 phone. As Sony Ericsson puts it “In an increasingly complex world, an innovative phone is honed down to the essentials. Xperia Pureness is free from excessive features, leaving an exceptionally simplified mobile experience. Talk. Text. Time.” Yep, the theme of the Pureness is “talk.text.time” and when SE says that, they mean it pretty literally.

Sony Ericsson Pureness gets £530 UK launch in November

, Sep 15th 2009 Discuss [0]

Sony Ericsson's Pureness cellphone has been confirmed for the UK, but the company is not going for the usual pile-'em-high strategy.  Instead, when the handset - which has a translucent-display - arrives in November, would-be buyers will need to trek to Selfridges and design museum shops; that's because, according to SE spokesperson Cathy Davies, the Pureness is an "iconic niche product, not mass market." Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness clear-screen cellphone gets video demo

, Sep 8th 2009 Discuss [0]

Sony Ericsson's XPERIA Pureness managed to split opinion last week, with some reckoning that the clear-display candybar was a triumph of design and new materials, while others dismissed it as a gimmick.  No matter the camp, though, we'll always welcome new images, and so SE-First's hands-on gallery and video with the XPERIA Pureness is a must-see. Video demo after the cut Read The Full Story

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness Unveiled, Probably Should Have Stayed Veiled

, Sep 3rd 2009 Discuss [0]

Sony Ericsson"released the X2 yesterday, but it looks like they couldn't let things go on a good note. Well, maybe not a good note. Let's call it a rational note. After seeing this video of the XPERIA Pureness, we're not sure what to think. There's definitely some interesting aspects to it, but just one look at the phone, and you've got to tell yourself that the cost is surely going to outweigh any feature set this device could have.
