Snapchat starts dabbling with music videos

Snapchat has been slowly but surely expanding its reach, adding in content from various partners in an effort to draw in more users and advertisers. Latest to give the mobile service a shot is Josh Legg, a musician who goes by the name Goldroom. Given that some of his fanbase has started increasingly using Snapchat as a communication medium, he has decided to partner with the messaging service and will release four music videos on it. The first video came out on Tuesday, and the last one is scheduled to be released tomorrow.

Snapchat update brings Discover clips feature

Today Snapchat released updates for its iOS and Android apps, bringing both to version 9.7.0. There are a couple new features, but the most notable of the two aims to make users more aware of (or, perhaps, more inclined to use) Discover, the discovery feature the app added in the relatively recent past. Though the feature has been around since January, statistics show that it isn't being utilized very often...something Snapchat is apparently hoping to change with this newest update.

Snapchat’s sneaky hiring tactics target Uber engineers

Apparently, one of the best ways to recruit new talent in Silicon Valley is to poach certifiable talent from other tech industry giants. Snapchat is looking for a few good engineers, and the social networking company is using the unique strategy of target geo-filters to reach out to current Uber employees who might be looking for a change. Snapchat users at Uber's headquarters in San Francisco found a geo-filter that was tailor-made to poach Uber engineers.

Yahoo may be readying new Messenger to battle Snapchat, Periscope

You probably don’t use Yahoo Messenger. It’s tired, really. As a simple chat app, it’s fine, but we want more than that. In an age of sending each other more than words, Yahoo is way behind. Instead of dropping messaging, Yahoo may be priming a revamp to Messenger, one that reportedly combine live and recorded video sharing. This app is meant for mobile, though it’s not clear if Yahoo is also readying the app for your desktop as well. If the report is accurate, we’ll see this new Messenger by the end of Q2 2015.

Snapchat update makes relationship status visual with emoji

Snapchat has pushed out an update that shows your relationship status with users you snap via emoji, which are private to each user and appear next to some of the friends in your Snapchat feed. Snapchat tipped in live sports broadcasting effort

Snapchat has been rolling out different features over the months, and though it can't seen to do so without some sort of issue cropping up, that hasn't stopped it yet. According to new sources that have cropped up, the disappearing-selfie service is looking to bring live sports broadcasting to its sharing platform, and it will be kicking it off (assuming that all goes as planned) with the NCAA Final Four. Neither Snapchat nor others have confirmed the rumor at this time.

Snapchat’s Safety Center wants to educate parents

Snapchat’s Safety Center wants to educate parents

Snapchat is one of those big ironies of Internet history. It was originally designed to be safe and private due to the "ephemeral" nature of shared content. That, however, was used as a license to share revealing photos, which would eventually get leaked circulated to the public. Add to that more recent complaints about the company's security practices, or lack of it, and you would understand why Snapchat is now trying to save its reputation with a Safety Center that informs parents and teachers what Snapchat is all about.

Snapchat reportedly seeking $16-19 billion valuation in funding round

According to a new report, Snapchat thinks they’re worth between $16-19 billion. The last time we learned about Snapchat’s market value, it was August — and they were valued at $10 billion based on 100 million monthly users. While we’re not hearing what Snapchat’s current monthly user statistics are, it’s likely not why they’re raising funds or seeking a larger valuation. If they were successful in raising cash, Snapchat would become the third largest startup on Earth, behind only Uber and Xiaomi.

Snapchat update causing app to chew through data

Snapchat update causing app to chew through data

Snapchat is often a litany of updates and issues, and that pattern has repeated itself with this latest update. If you've recently updated the app, and have also noticed your data usage has skyrocketed, the two might be related, at least if reports from other users prove to be a trend. Following the update released in late January, users have started noticing that Snapchat is using quite a bit of background data, enough to deplete some users' monthly data allotment in a week or two.
