Sticking to the parking-friendly 2.69m (8.83 feet) length, the new ForTwo keeps its rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with a trio of new three-cylinder engines, an electric version, convertible option, and plenty of safety technology and other components borrowed from Mercedes' C-Class.

BMW UR:BAN smart car tech predicts pedestrians and jams

Google isn't the only company talking up its autonomous car tech this week, with BMW presenting its own self-driving enhancements that it says will help navigate urban sprawl while still leaving you in charge of "the ultimate driving machine." The car firm has been showing off its UR:BAN research - the acronym only makes sense in German, but roughly translates to "Urban Space: User-oriented assistance systems and network management" - which could help avoid running over pedestrians, and drive more efficiently by predicting how stop lights will change.

Crash-avoidance tech rated as safest “smart cars” named

Independent testing on crash-avoidance systems has begun for the first time in the US, with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) putting auto-braking and other technologies through their paces. The new program - which has started out testing 2013-14 model year midsize cars and SUVs - assigns one of three levels of performance to the systems it reviews, either basic, advanced, or superior. So far, out of 74 vehicles tested, the IIHS has found seven worthy of the top-tier superior rating.
