Today at Macworld Sling Media has announced the SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone, an application. They also showed a prototype of the new SlingPlayer for Mac HD, which as the name states will allow you to use the Slingbox PRO HD to stream HD to their Mac desktop or laptop.
Dave Zatz over at Sling Media said they were definitely one of the first 100k people to download the recent iPhone SDK and that they have been looking at it in an effort to bring SlingPlayer to the iPhone. Sling Media has been looking for a way to get their coveted software on the iPhone for quite sometime, ever since last April in fact, and it looks like they might finally be able to pull it off.
How smart can a set-top box get? If EchoStar are behind it then the answer is pretty darn smart indeed; the company's new DVR, the EchoStar SlingLoaded HDS-600RS, pulls together not only live TV recording and time-shifting but media shifting using Slingbox technology. Initially intended for the UK freesat+ system, the HDS-600RS promises to push live and recorded content to your iPad, laptop and smartphone whether you're at home or on the move. SlashGear caught up with the EchoStar team to find out more.
It's a massive day for posts, where even SlashPhone has a fresh blast of news on this pre-holiday day. Lots of sales, lots of products being introduced. And then there was Black Friday. Let me talk to you for a moment about a couple of the odder things that happened today, and this is outside the story you're going to hear about in the special "The Daily Slash" section you all know and love. First, there's a lot of ports, ROMS, and hacks flying around the smartphone world on a day-to-day, but today there was a rather important one surfacing: Android to iPhone. Like two rival gangs having a child together. No violence between them yet, but someone DID get shot today - a Galaxy Tab. In response, Angry Birds released 45 new levels, and someone records a UFO on an HTC EVO 4G. TRON throws a card into the hat with their 3rd giant trailer, iPhone's GLASSGATE ramps up, and all Apple handhelds grow a little tail. All this and more, today, on THE DAILY SLASH!
Hello and welcome to a rather aftershock of a day for Apple and an oncoming wave of a day for Windows Phone 7. SlashPhone had a lot of news about release dates and kneecap shredding in anticipation for phones. Dummies and tablets and developer notes galore on Android Community. And SlashGear bringing you everything from game glasses to head lights to holders and docks for all your new fancies.
Sling Media's Slingbox PRO-HD for the European market has been a long time coming, two years in fact, though the streaming media market has largely left its niche alone in the meantime. As with the US model, the PRO-HD promises to take your SD and HD video sources - cable TV box, DVR, DVD player or even CCTV hardware - and squirt it over the internet; however, this new version also includes a Freeview tuner to add free-to-air digital TV to that list. Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.
One of the apps that iPhone users wanted the most was Sling Player so they could watch TV shows and other content right on the iPhone. With the iPad coming many are wondering exactly what Sling has in store for SlingPlayer Mobile on the iPad.
The problem with "Best Product" run-downs - as the iPhone 3GS/DROID arguments proved - is that just a few people are left to decide what are the stand-out devices of the moment. If you'd prefer to make your own voice heard, head over to Last Gadget Standing where they're taking votes for the top tech right now.
We kicked off the week with a review of Sony's OLED Walkman X, coming away mighty impressed by its iPod-besting audio quality. Equally impressive was Flip Video's Ultra HD pocket camcorder; if only we could say the same for SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone. While on paper this media-shifting app should be a 100-percent winner, AT&T's decision to bar streaming over their 3G network has left us and many would-be users upset.
