How smart can a set-top box get? If EchoStar are behind it then the answer is pretty darn smart indeed; the company’s new DVR, the EchoStar SlingLoaded HDS-600RS, pulls together not only live TV recording and time-shifting but media shifting using Slingbox technology. Initially intended for the UK freesat+ system, the HDS-600RS promises to push live and recorded content to your iPad, laptop and smartphone whether you’re at home or on the move. SlashGear caught up with the EchoStar team to find out more.

The Daily Slash: November 9 2010

, Nov 9th 2010 Discuss [0]

Let me talk to you for a moment about a couple of the odder things that happened today, and this is outside the story you're going to hear about in the special "The Daily Slash" section you all know and love. First, there's a lot of ports, ROMS, and hacks flying around the smartphone world on a day-to-day, but today there was a rather important one surfacing: Android to iPhone. Like two rival gangs having a child together. No violence between them yet, but someone DID get shot today - a Galaxy Tab. In response, Angry Birds released 45 new levels, and someone records a UFO on an HTC EVO 4G. TRON throws a card into the hat with their 3rd giant trailer, iPhone's GLASSGATE ramps up, and all Apple handhelds grow a little tail. All this and more, today, on THE DAILY SLASH! Slingbox PRO-HD Freeview Review

, Sep 23rd 2010 Discuss [0]

Sling Media’s Slingbox PRO-HD for the European market has been a long time coming, two years in fact, though the streaming media market has largely left its niche alone in the meantime.  As with the US model, the PRO-HD promises to take your SD and HD video sources – cable TV box, DVR, DVD player or even CCTV hardware – and squirt it over the internet; however, this new version also includes a Freeview tuner to add free-to-air digital TV to that list.  Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

SlingPlayer Mobile for Android hands-on [Video]

, May 28th 2010 Discuss [0]

Sling Media have released a brief demo of their new SlingPlayer Android client, but we fancied a better play and so managed to grab a copy of the beta for ourselves.  Loaded up on a Nexus One, the control process was just as straightforward on the Google phone’s 3.7-inch display as it looks on the EVO 4G’s 4.3-inch screen; picture quality is decent, and while there are a lot of on-screen controls – since they’re basically recreating your full set-top box remote in the mobile client – after a little use it’s all reasonably familiar.  More first impressions – and a demo video – after the cut.

Sling “didn’t change” SlingPlayer for iPhone for AT&T approval

, Feb 5th 2010 Discuss [0]

Yesterday's news that SlingPlayer for iPhone was finally being allowed to use AT&T's 3G network was widely accompanied by a quote from AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega claiming that Sling Media had modified the code to suit the carrier.  Today, however, Sling Media themselves are claiming that they made no changes to the app; representative John Santoro says "we didn't change anything ... AT&T never discussed any specific requirements with us." Read The Full Story

Sling Player for iPhone getting AT&T 3G streaming

, Feb 4th 2010 Discuss [0]

AT&T's decision to deny iPhone users the ability to stream their Sling content over 3G soured the launch of the app last year, but it seems the carrier has now relented.  According to the press release, AT&T have been testing a freshly "optimized" version of the Sling Player for iPhone software, which it obviously believes won't drag its 3G network to its knees.
