Android smartphone shipments skyrocket as AOSP (for China) sounds off

There are a couple of reports out this week on the state of the mobile smart device industry, both of them centered on shipment and both of them suggesting that Android is doing exceedingly well. The first comes from Strategy Analytics and focuses on the entire year in smartphone shipments, suggesting that Android has "captured 79 percent share of all smartphones shipped worldwide." Meanwhile ABI Research has suggested that the fourth quarter of the 2013 season has also shown itself to belong to Android, ringing in a cool 77% market share for the Google-made mobile operating system in smartphone shipments.

SkyDrive rebranded to OneDrive following legal tussle with British Sky Broadcasting

Trademarks are tricky business, often involving legal battles over whether a common word -- such as "sky" -- that is well-known for a specific brand -- such as British Sky Broadcasting -- can be snapped up from usage among other brands, such as Microsoft's SkyDrive. Such became the source of an infringement claim against Microsoft by BSkyB, and all of it has been followed by an announcement today that Microsoft will be rebranding SkyDrive to OneDrive.

Call of Duty and Skylanders keep Activision in NPD’s top spots for 2013

There's a couple of games appearing in NPD's tracking of video games for the end of 2013 that put Activision in a rather healthy spot for entering in this year's full range of releases. With Call of Duty: Ghosts, Activision sees the #1 Top-Selling Next Gen Title through 2013 - that's both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, while it remains the best-selling title overall in December as well. Meanwhile Skylanders - as a video game franchise - won best-selling of the entire year for the kids video games category.
