Sky+ iPhone app turns phone into DVR remote

Sky TV subscribers in the UK can now use their iPhone as a remote control for the Sky+ HD set-top box, with the smartphone joining its iPad sibling in doubling as a universal controller. The updated Sky+ app, released for Apple's tablet earlier this year, now works on both the iPhone and iPod touch, giving smartphone control over channel changing, full access to the program guide and scheduling recordings, and gesture-based navigation through playback.

Sky+ adds BBC iPlayer for on-demand entertainment

Sky UK has added the BBC's iPlayer video-on-demand service to Sky+, the first time the VoD system has been enabled on the satellite provider's boxes. Requiring a Sky+ HD set-top box, and with content showing up in the Sky On Demand section of the DVR, the new iPlayer addition uses roughly the same interface as its browser-based version, only now no longer requires a laptop be hooked up to the TV.

Sky and Warner Bros. ink exclusive movie deal: iTunes, Netflix left out in cold

Movie lovers in the UK may struggle to find their title of choice to watch in the coming months, with news that Sky and Warner Bros. have signed an exclusive deal for new and back-catalog titles. The agreement covers both Sky's on-demand and subscription Sky Movies services, and will see new Warner Bros. releases hit the broadcaster roughly six months after they finish showing in theaters. Other services will have to wait out a twelve month exclusivity period after that before they can offer titles like The Dark Knight Rises, and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

The UK Competition Commission has been looking into whether or not BSkyB exclusive deals in place with six major Hollywood movie studios are limiting competition for online movie streaming within the country. BSkyB has contracts with Disney, Warner Bros., Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, and Universal Studios. The investigation seeks to determine if those contracts are anticompetitive and need to be broken to allow competition.

The social network known as Google+ has once again shown another tiny improvement set to make big waves, and it's got us all thinking that Skype may be on its way out alongside all over enterprise conferencing systems. Google+ Hangouts (the On Air version) now has a Full Screen button, this allowing you to turn your entire monitor into your conferencing station. While Skype and other conferencing systems have had similar functionality to this for a while now, Hangouts ability to use virtual whiteboards and screen sharing have the potential to put the competition out of business.
