Next-gen Siri will rely on open source back-end

Next-gen Siri will rely on open source back-end

When Apple launched ResearchKit, the platform was open source, allowing anyone to contribute or develop for ResearchKit. The snarky quip was that Apple finally figured out what open source was. It looks like Apple wasn’t done with open source; they’ve apparently based the new Siri engine on an open source platform known as Mesos. It’s the same platform used by other major tech companies like Airbnb and Twitter, and Mesos says Siri will be one of the largest Mesos clusters.

Yahoo to take on Siri and Google Now (again) with Index

Yahoo to take on Siri and Google Now (again) with Index

Yahoo is one company that definitely doesn't have "quit" in its vocabulary. Predating but practically overthrown by Google and perhaps to some extent even Bing, Yahoo is always in search of new ways to generate income but without budging on its true calling. Under CEO Marissa Mayer, the company is hedging its bets on search. But it won't be taking on Google directly, though of course it will do that as well. Instead, it is training its guns on Google Now, Siri, and Cortana. Yes, Yahoo will once again be entering the personal assistant arena. This time perhaps for real.

Microsoft’s voice assistant Cortana ported to Android by hackers

Microsoft’s voice assistant Cortana ported to Android by hackers

Apple may have been the first to bring a voice-powered digital assistant to smartphones with Siri, but Microsoft followed up in a big way with its own Cortana. Named after the AI companion from the Halo video game series, Cortana has been available on a number of Windows Phone models, and is expected to play a big part in the forthcoming Windows 10. Obviously, being a Microsoft creation, Cortana has been limited to Windows devices. That is, until a couple of hackers managed to bring her to Android.

iOS 8.3 settings: skip password for free apps, Siri makes speakerphone calls

iOS 8.3 settings: skip password for free apps, Siri makes speakerphone calls

As Apple recently released the latest beta version of iOS 8.3, several new settings options have been discovered by testers. Among them is a new option related to entering an Apple ID password when free apps are downloaded, as well the ability for virtual assistant Siri to make calls via speakerphone. The current version of iOS 8.2 still requires passwords to be entered when choosing to download a free app, while having Siri place call, even when using the hands-free "Hey Siri" method, would automatically switch the audio to the ear piece.

Siri, Cortana saves voice commands, passes to 3rd parties

Siri, Cortana saves voice commands, passes to 3rd parties

The recent privacy scandal that Samsung's Smart TVs have brought the issue of privacy and security with such voice-controlled features into the spotlight. But if you thought that Samsung was alone in this behavior, you'd be dead wrong. Perhaps it isn't common knowledge yet that smart assistants like Siri, Google Now, or even Cortana do keep your commands for some time for the purpose of improving services. But the duration of that storage as well as its reach is probably not so known. Until now.

Microsoft shuns Apple for “bigger” Siri in iPhone 6 Plus

Microsoft shuns Apple for “bigger” Siri in iPhone 6 Plus

The Lumia 830 is up to bat this week in a video spot created by Microsoft to hate on the iPhone 6 Plus. This Lumia smartphone takes on the slightly larger iPhone 6 Plus by speaking with Cortana. The screens have been simulated, of course, and the sequences have been shortened - and the voices have been modified so they'll say what fits the commercial. But still, there's comedy to be found here in a war of the personal assistants, one for Windows Phone 8, the other for iOS.

Amazon Echo puts Siri-style smarts in a column of cloud

Amazon has revealed its latest hardware project, Amazon Echo, an unusual always-listening home assistant that promises Siri or Google Now style virtual PA features from a cloud-connected totem for your home or office. Woken with a spoken keyword - "Alexa" or "Amazon" initially, with more to come - rather than pressing any buttons, Echo can be asked for information on anything from current news or weather conditions, to play music from a particular artist, to set alarms or add items to shopping or to-do lists, or just to get the answers to questions.

Car tech and Siri slammed for driver distraction

Car tech and Siri slammed for driver distraction

Capable but complex infotainment systems built into modern car dashboards are dangerously distracting, a driver safety study has concluded, while voice controlled systems like Apple's Siri have been equally criticized. Hands-free tech intended to maintain a driver's grip on the wheel can, ironically, cause greater cognitive distraction than actually picking up a phone, a study by the AAA and the University of Utah revealed, testing a number of basic tasks like making calls or changing radio station across cars from Toyota, Mercedes, and other marques.
