iOS Assistant based on Siri tech, able to access contacts, calendars, and email

Apple's newest mobile operating system by the name of iOS 5 just keeps getting better and better it seems, today being sort of confirmed to be working with Siri technology, Siri being a company Apple purchased last year. Also in play is the fact that Nuance, a company that powers the voice-recognition aspect of Siri's current iPhone app, has recently released a separate app very similar to the current Siri app - this launching the idea that Apple's iOS 5 "Assistant" could be working completely on Nuance technology. We already know the two companies to be working together on one project: OS X Lion uses Nuance speech technology.

Apple may soon have Siri transcribe voicemail messages

According to a new report, Apple is said to be working on integrating voicemail into iCloud, bringing about some of the biggest advancements since visual voicemail on the first iPhone. This information comes from Business Insider, which says the primary feature will be Siri's ability to transcribe voicemails into text, letting users read their messages instead of listen to the audio. Even more interesting, this iCloud Voicemail will deliver custom messages to select callers, and even let them know the user's location.

iPhone bug has Siri calling emergency services if asked to charge battery

iPhone bug has Siri calling emergency services if asked to charge battery

Apple's voice assistant Siri does a lot of things iPhone users ask her to do; maybe not always perfectly, but at least their somewhat related to the request. However, it has recently been discovered that asking the device to charge the battery triggers the software to start calling emergency services. It's not clear if this is a bug — though most likely it is — or exactly why this happens. Perhaps part of an unannounced security feature? Either way, it's something to aware of, and avoid if possible.

Facebook’s “Moneypenny” assistant is all about shopping

Facebook’s “Moneypenny” assistant is all about shopping

It seems that Facebook has been rumored to be working on several products to seemingly directly compete with existing services, like the music streaming service that Facebook has denied it is developing. The latest seems to be a digital assistant of sorts but one that is probably unlike anything you've heard of or seen. Unlike Siri or Cortana, who are more concerned about your schedules and flights, Ms. Moneypenny is more focused on where your spend your money. And it's doing so with the help, not of machine learning, but of other people.

Microsoft reveals Cortana voice assistant is coming to iPhone, Android

Sounds like Siri is in for some competition. Over on the Windows blog, Microsoft has revealed that its own voice-powered assistant, Cortana, will be coming to iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad, as well as the Android platform. It seems that Microsoft is gearing up to have Cortana graduate from Windows-exclusivity, and exist as a cross-platform app on non-Windows devices. We were only treated to a few quick glimpses of the app in a video, but the voice assistant appears to work much like it does on the Windows Phones of today.

Next-gen Siri will rely on open source back-end

Next-gen Siri will rely on open source back-end

When Apple launched ResearchKit, the platform was open source, allowing anyone to contribute or develop for ResearchKit. The snarky quip was that Apple finally figured out what open source was. It looks like Apple wasn’t done with open source; they’ve apparently based the new Siri engine on an open source platform known as Mesos. It’s the same platform used by other major tech companies like Airbnb and Twitter, and Mesos says Siri will be one of the largest Mesos clusters.

Yahoo to take on Siri and Google Now (again) with Index

Yahoo to take on Siri and Google Now (again) with Index

Yahoo is one company that definitely doesn't have "quit" in its vocabulary. Predating but practically overthrown by Google and perhaps to some extent even Bing, Yahoo is always in search of new ways to generate income but without budging on its true calling. Under CEO Marissa Mayer, the company is hedging its bets on search. But it won't be taking on Google directly, though of course it will do that as well. Instead, it is training its guns on Google Now, Siri, and Cortana. Yes, Yahoo will once again be entering the personal assistant arena. This time perhaps for real.

Microsoft’s voice assistant Cortana ported to Android by hackers

Apple may have been the first to bring a voice-powered digital assistant to smartphones with Siri, but Microsoft followed up in a big way with its own Cortana. Named after the AI companion from the Halo video game series, Cortana has been available on a number of Windows Phone models, and is expected to play a big part in the forthcoming Windows 10. Obviously, being a Microsoft creation, Cortana has been limited to Windows devices. That is, until a couple of hackers managed to bring her to Android.
