IBM blocks Siri on its networks

, May 23rd 2012 Discuss [0]

When you use Siri, voice data is sent back to Apple’s servers in order to be processed, but the information is also stored there for a period of time to help hone the voice assistant. IBM seems to be a little spooked by this, and has begun blocking use of Siri on its private networks in the fear that sensitive information may wind up in the wrong hands. Read The Full Story

Samsung and Vlingo blocking unofficial S-Voice use

, May 21st 2012 Discuss [0]

Samsung Galaxy S IIIs are already out there in the wild even though the phone doesn’t official hit retail channels until May 29th. The exclusive Flipboard APK was ripped from the phone pretty quickly, and over the weekend Samsung’s personal voice assistant, S-Voice, was also uploaded for anyone with an Android phone running Ice Cream Sandwich to enjoy. Samsung doesn’t seem to be amused by such shenanigans, and has blocked users from accessing the feature. Read The Full Story

Apple blasts Siri class-action: Gold-diggers with unfair expectations

, May 16th 2012 Discuss [0]

Apple has fired back at iPhone 4S users who joined a class-action suit accusing the company of deceptive advertising around Siri's capabilities, arguing the complainers are simply out to make money. In a freshly filed motion to dismiss the suit, Apple suggests that rather than having legitimate issues with the accuracy of the "beta" virtual personal assistant system on the iPhone, those taking part in the class-action motion can only give vague indications of how Siri has let them down. Ask Siri what the best smartphone is – she’ll say Nokia Lumia 900

, May 11th 2012 Discuss [0]

Apple's voice recognition platform on the iPhone 4S is an attempt at creating something that interacts with you like a human. And in fact, Siri may even be more human than people who work at Apple because it looks like she is capable of humility. Apparently if you ask the digital assistant "What is the best smartphone ever?" she will tell you it's the Windows Phone-powered Nokia Lumia 900. Read The Full Story

Google Project Glass: Siri or Clippy?

, Apr 5th 2012 Discuss [0]

“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could” Jeff Goldblum memorably said in Jurassic Park, ”that they didn’t stop to think if they should”; has Google done the same with Project Glass? Initial reactions to the wearable computing concept shown off publicly yesterday were predictably gobsmacked, the eye-catching demo video showing an idealized and alluring view of augmented reality. After the dust has settled, though, comes the question: is Project Glass Google’s Siri, or is it actually more like Microsoft’s ill-fated Clippy?

Who’s buying the Apple TV?

, Mar 26th 2012 Discuss [0]

Apple has already fessed up to the new iPad selling well, but sales stats for the refreshed Apple TV have been less forthcoming. The company added 1080p support to the set-top box, together with refreshing the interface, while a new Apple A5X chipset now allows for Full HD AirPlay streaming from the new iPad. Yet there's still no indication whether Apple's "one more thing" was a success or otherwise. Read The Full Story
