Xiaomi Mi Note hands-on: More than just an Apple clone

Xiaomi Mi Note hands-on: More than just an Apple clone

Xiaomi is on a charm offensive, and that means setting the record straight. Outspoken VP of International Hugo Barra returned to San Francisco alongside Xiaomi President Lin Bin to introduce the MIUI flavor of Android, not to mention the latest Mi Note smartphone, to a curious - if a little skeptical - tech press. Wildly popular in China and other countries, but known more for the inspiration it's accused of taking from Apple and others in the West, Xiaomi isn't quite ready for a US launch but thought it was high time we saw just what Chinese users are enjoying.

Galaxy S6 Edge detailed with 3-sided screen

Galaxy S6 Edge detailed with 3-sided screen

This week the folks at Samsung seem to have a leaking problem - and/or the people talking about the Galaxy S6 have read the rumors from last week. Word this week is that the Samsung Galaxy S6 will have a double-sided or triple-sided display, taking the Galaxy Note 4's best friend Galaxy Note Edge up a notch. This device would have two curved edges, one on the left, the other on the right of the main screen. There's also rumors of metal! And a high-powered camera!

Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge get official mention

Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge get official mention

Samsung has seemingly confirmed that there will be two variants of the Galaxy S6 smartphone, with one - the Galaxy S6 Edge - expected to use a curved touchscreen. The new flagship will make its official debut at Samsung's pre-Mobile World Congress event in just a few weeks time, but two support pages for the Galaxy S6 (referred to by its SM-G920X product code) and the S6 Edge (as the SM-G925X) have already sprung up. Although neither has anything so useful as product shots or even diagrams of what the handsets will look like, it's apparent confirmation that the curved side-screen first used on the Galaxy Note Edge isn't quite ready for mass-market use.

Galaxy S6 Edge details arrive in cases

Today the Samsung Galaxy S Edge seems to have been re-confirmed alongside the Samsung Galaxy S6. In an image of a selection of cases from little-known brand Verus, both the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge (or just S Edge) can be seen. Here you'll notice that the Samsung device's edge is not just all by its lonesome, it's joined by some volume keys as well. This is different from the Galaxy Note Edge which keeps all of its buttons to the top or the opposite side of the device.

Galaxy S6 Edge teased by Samsung

Galaxy S6 Edge teased by Samsung

On the first of March, 2015, we'll be in Barcelona to see Samsung's next big thing. In this case, it'll almost certainly be a Samsung Galaxy S6, but there could very well be more than that. There could be a follow-up to the surprise hit that was the Galaxy Note Edge. This week Samsung has teased what could possibly be the Samsung Galaxy Edge, the first in a line of curved-screen devices made smaller than the Note - perhaps even with more than one edge to fiddle with.

Samsung Galaxy S6 design leaks: smaller screen, taller body

In just about a month, we will finally see what Samsung really has in store for its Galaxy S6 flagship. For this round, we're taking a peek at the overall design of the smartphone, with a particular attention to the body and screen size. The good news is that, while somewhat taller, the Galaxy S6 might be more "handy" than its predecessor.

Sorry Samsung, Apple’s probably the smartphone king

Sorry Samsung, Apple’s probably the smartphone king

Apple's Q4 2014 may not only have been its best quarter ever for iPhone sales, but the point at which it overtook arch-rival Samsung in the smartphone business. The Cupertino firm announced a massive 74.5m iPhone sales in the final three months of last year, setting itself a new record and - according to at least one research firm - putting it on at least level-pegging with Samsung. The South Korean company has played coy with its Galaxy numbers, but it's clear that Apple's rapid ascent has dramatically closed (if not destroyed) the gap between the two.

Samsung’s Q4 earnings report shows company down but not out

Samsung’s Q4 earnings report shows company down but not out

Many companies have dropped their latest earnings report today, and included among them is Samsung. The Korean company saw profits of 5.35 trillion won/$4.9 billion in its fourth quarter (ending December 31), an unfortunate decrease from the previous year of 27-percent. The results aren't all that surprising given the company's struggles in the recent past, but there was a glimmer of light through it all: the quarter's revenue was on the upswing with an 11-percent quarter-on-quarter increase to 52.73 trillion won.

Galaxy S6 case sparks interest, but it’s probably nonsense

Galaxy S6 case sparks interest, but it’s probably nonsense

At MWC this year, we’re likely going to get our hands on the Galaxy S6 from Samsung. While rumors have been circulating about the new flagship from Samsung, we’ve not seen much that gives us a hint at anything official. A case has been spotted on amazon, which points to some aesthetic changes Samsung could be making. Most notably, the rear camera ensemble is changed, with the flash sitting to the side of the camera, not underneath like the Galaxy S5. Still, something is really off, here. Can this listing be trusted?
