Samsung’s not giving up on VR: Gear VR GS6 hands-on

Samsung’s not giving up on VR: Gear VR GS6 hands-on

I honestly didn't think I'd have to mess up my charming, hobo-like mess of hair so often at MWC 2015, but Samsung wasn't going to let me get away without trying the new Gear VR for the Galaxy S6. An updated version of last year's Gear VR for the Galaxy Note, the new model keeps the same basic principle - your smartphone screen, when docked up-front, becomes a stereoscopic display - but updates it to suit the new Galaxy S6 and S6 edge Samsung announced on Sunday. Thing is, having already been wowed by the HTC Vive, can Samsung's altogether more straightforward headset compete?

Galaxy Note 5’s Gear VR will be a “full-on consumer” release

This week at GDC 2015, Oculus Rift's John Carmack suggested that the company would be going full-on consumer release within Samsung's next release cycle. This does not necessarily mean that Oculus Rift will be released inside Samsung's next release cycle, but that Samsung's next Gear VR would be released in a big way. That very likely means that the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will have a Gear VR released right alongside the smartphone. So look to the Samsung Gear VR 2 - for Galaxy S6, revealed this week - to get an idea of where you're going later this year.

Galaxy S6 benchmarked, outpaces every other smartphone

Galaxy S6 benchmarked, outpaces every other smartphone

Ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge reveal, a lot of discussion was aimed at Samsung’s choice of SoC for their new flagship. Stateside, we’re familiar with Snapdragon SoC processors in our phones, so anything else seems strange on paper). Samsung was developing their new Exynos SoC, using an impressive new 14nm manufacturing process. Still, they weren’t offering a Snapdragon alternative, so it seemed like a wholesale snubbing. If the latest benchmark results from Geekbench can be believed, we might know why.

Galaxy S6 Edge vs. Note Edge; Samsung gets edgy

Galaxy S6 Edge vs. Note Edge; Samsung gets edgy

Now that we can call Samsung the edgiest smartphone maker on the planet, with their two curved-screen devices that tumble off the side of the device, it’s time to compare the two. Should you opt for the larger Note Edge, or is the Galaxy S6 Edge right for you? Two sloped sides, or one? Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge hands-on: 2015’s hard-hitters

You might want to sit down for this one: Samsung has, with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, finally built the Android smartphones we’ve been asking it for. Freshly announced at Mobile World Congress 2015 today, the new flagship pair also debut a new design language for the South Korean company, taking what was hinted at with the Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy Note 4, and finally doing away with Samsung’s old plastic fetish in favor of metal, glass, and - in the case of the Galaxy S6 edge - double-curved AMOLED. Read on past the cut for my first-impressions.
