The teams at NASA and GM behind the Robonaut 2's Robo-Glove have made the decision to allow licensing of their technology for public use. The glove is made to amplify the abilities of the wearer, not entirely unlike that of the glove of Iron Man in the Marvel Comics universe. This glove allows its user to blast through tasks that require high hand strength - grasping and repetitive tasks especially.

SpaceX CRS-3 Falcon 9 launches for ISS resupply mission

SpaceX has successfully launched its CRS-3 Mission, the second attempt to send the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station and further demonstrate the effectiveness of its reusable technology. The launch - scratched earlier in the week - will take a number of specialist devices and equipment to the ISS, including a new laser communication array, and high-resolution cameras which will give viewers new glimpse of Earth from orbit.

DARPA has been hosting a Robotics Challenge since last year that challenged some participants to create robots that can be used in the real world. The official name for the Valkyrie robot given to it by NASA is R5. The bot stands 1.9 meters tall and weighs in at 125 kilograms. The robot has 44 degrees of freedom and is powered by batteries.

NASA X1 Exoskeleton keep astronauts fit and could help disabled walk

NASA's Robonaut 2 program has spawned an exoskeleton suit that could eventually help disabled people walk again as well as allow astronauts greater flexibility when roaming distant planets. Developed by NASA and the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC), the X1 Robotic Exoskeleton weighs 57-pounds and has ten joints, four of which are motorized. However, while like other exoskeletons we've seen, the X1 can work to augment the wearer's movements, it can also be set to work against them.

Russia working to put a robot on the ISS

General Motors and NASA collaborated to build the US robot called Robonaut 2 that is now aboard the international space station. The goal of that project was to develop a teleoperated humanoid robot that can be used for missions too hazardous for humans and general repairs aboard the space station. Interestingly, Russia has been at work on its own humanoid robot that will be sent to the ISS within the next two years.

NASA and GM reveal Robo-Glove for astronauts and engineers

Tech for astronauts and automotive engineers seldom overlaps, but a robotic glove co-developed by General Motors and NASA could change all that. An offshoot of the Robonaut 2 project from last year, the Human Grasp Assist device - known unofficially as the K-glove or Robo-Glove - promises to make manual labor less intensive as well as reduce the risk of repetitive-stress injuries by cutting the amount of force needed to hold and use tools.

German Aerospace Agency DLR creates Rollin’ Justin robot

Robots are really cool. They also hold the promise of freeing humans from the drudgery of menial chores like vacuuming and cleaning in the future. A robot with the dexterity and agility to mimic human motion and our ability to manipulate tools is a big deal in the space industry. If we can get a robot that can work tools with fine motor control, we can use robots in instances where the environment is too dangerous for humans. This is one of NASA's goals with the Robonaut 2 robot that is aboard the ISS right now.

Robots are cool and while many of them that we talk about here are more for fun for a geek, there are many uses for robots that have nothing to do with fun. We have talked a lot about Robonaut 2 for instance that was designed by GM and NASA to help astronauts in space on the ISS. A high school student in Knox City, Texas uses his robot so he can attend classes since he can’t actually go to school.
