NASA’s ISS Robonaut 2 will soon have a pair of legs

Robots might not be at a Terminator level of sophistication, but the technology is growing rapidly, and NASA has revealed what it calls "another milestone" in humanoid space robotics: legs for the Robonaut 2, more commonly called R2. The agency's engineers are presently working on the climbing legs, which will give the robot a new degree of mobile freedom, enabling it to perform more tasks than currently possible.

Robonaut to get new legs in 2014

Just like Lt. Dan, Robonaut is set to get some new legs. NASA has announced that its robotic astronaut is currently aboard the ISS and will be getting a pair of robotic legs in 2014. When Robonaut was first sent to the ISS, the robot was only a torso with a pair of highly advanced hands.

NASA Robonaut 2 Simulator stack now available for public download

The real Robonaut 2 may be up in the International Space Station helping astronauts with day-to-day activities, but now NASA is giving you the chance to have your own Robonaut 2 to experiment with (in a manner of speaking). NASA recently released the Robonaut 2 Simulator stack through ROS (Robot Operating System) and is inviting those with the know-how to download the stack and see what they can get the virtual Robonaut 2 to do.

Robonaut shakes hands with ISS commander for the first time

Robonaut shakes hands with ISS commander for the first time

Our robotic pal Robonaut has finally been completely put together up on the ISS. Robonaut has been in orbit for a long time now, but he spent most of that time packed up in his fancy container. The astronauts on the ISS have finally unpacked Robonaut and connected his legs and arms. Robonaut and the ISS commander were able to shake hands for the first time yesterday.

Astronauts finally pull Robonaut 2 out of storage

Poor old R2 made the trek to the ISS aboard the space shuttle last month after being crammed inside his storage crate for months on end. R2 or Robonaut 2 as his full name goes is the robot built by NASA and GM to study the interaction of people in space with robots. GM is using the project to develop technology for more safety in vehicles and on assembly lines here on Earth.

GM touts Robonaut 2’s hands

A space shuttle missions headed to the ISS soon will have a robotic passenger onboard called Robonaut 2 or R2 for short. R2 is a humanoid robot that is designed to allow NASA to study the interaction between humans and robots. The thought is that R2 might be able to be used by astronauts to perform tasks that might be hazardous for humans in the future.

GM and NASA team up on Robonaut 2 humanoid robot

Space exploration is one of the things that many Americans want to see continue, but there are some mission that are too dangerous for humans. NASA also wants to develop humanoid robots that can work side by side with humans in space and to make that happen NASA and GM are working together on a humanoid robot called Robonaut 2.
