YouTube's new Leanback lounge-friendly UI went live last week, but if you're more comfortable with a remote control than a keyboard then WiiLeanback may be of interest.  The handiwork of Robert Oschler, who has been merrily controlling WowWee robots with the Nintendo Wii controller for some time, WiiLeanback is basically a simple way to use the wiimote as a remote for the new YouTube interface. WowWee's Rovio has already seen several DIY remote control hacks - whether it's from your Android phone or via an E Ink board - but this is perhaps the best yet.  Robert Oschler has hooked up an Emotiv Epoq EEG headset allowing him (with some nifty software in-between) to control Rovio using thoughts, facial gestures and head movements. We're hearing that Nintendo's Wii MotionPlus accessory is beginning to ship from Amazon, with preorder customers receiving emails telling them their Wiimote add-on is on its way.  The MotionPlus dongle, which clips onto the base of the Wii's controller, went up for preorder back at the start of May, priced at $19.99; it brings with it greater motion recognition accuracy. WowWee Rovio to get Skype control with RoboDance 5 app

, Dec 8th 2008 Discuss [0]

When we looked at WowWee's Rovio last month, one thing we were certain of was its mod-potential.  As of next year, one of the more ambitious hacks will go live: RoboDance 5, with added support for Skype.  While setting up the Rovio's WiFi webcam streaming currently requires a little router tinkering, RoboDance 5 will utilize Skype's zero-config setup to instantly connect the robot and a remote client, whether that client be Windows or Mac, or even a smartphone. TOMY’s i-SOBOT lands, is unboxed, dances

, Oct 1st 2007 Discuss [3]

Over the past couple of days, RobotsRule's Robert Oschler - long-time tipster of all things servo-actuated - has been dancing a taunting dance before my jealous eyes, and crowing about having received his TOMY i-SOBOT robot.  I'm surprised to report that I've kept my cool, and instead drowned my sorrows in the new English version of the TOMY website and these unboxing photos and videos of the diminutive 'bot from waziwazi.   Read The Full Story

Our robot-obsessed friend Robert Oschler pointed out this awesome hack involving Skype, a WowWee Roboquad and internet connection, that lets you call up your robot from anywhere in the world, control it remotely and - thanks to a head-mounted video camera - stream live media back to you.  Here's a clip of the beastie in action: [youtube eK_qg6a29qM] Read The Full Story

RoboSapien + Wiimote = Fun Times

, Jan 5th 2007 Discuss [0]

Robert Oschler of Robodance.com has made the Nintendo Wii remote work with the RoboSapien robot that is made by WowWee. Oschler is the programmer behind the RoboSapien Dance Machine (AKA RoboDance) piece of software, which at the moment allows you to control the robot using your own voice. [youtube 6wsFwCnzRqE&eurl=]  Above is a video demonstrating some of the abilities of the software working with the RoboSapien. The programmer has noted that it will be released on or by February 1st 2007. The software works on Windows XP and had been awarded by SourceForge in May of 2005. Recently many mods have been made with the Wii controller including the ability to play Half-Life on a Mac with the controller (a double mod, because you also need another mod to run Half-Life on Mac), and talks of a 'Wiibrator'. Thanks for the tips Robert
