MacBook Pro 15-inch with Retina Review (late 2013)

MacBook Pro 15-inch with Retina Review (late 2013)

Back in June 2012 we described the original 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display as "the gold standard" for high-end notebooks; now, Apple is back with its refreshed version, swapping in Intel's latest Haswell processors and graphics, but keeping the high-resolution display. Unlike the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina, the 15-inch model doesn't slim down any, but then again the meatiest Pro has never really been about portability alone. Instead, it aims to be the powerhouse desktop-replacement that you can bring with you, and with a $200 cut to the sticker price it sounds all the more appealing. Has the 2013 refresh kept the most serious Pro at the top of its game? Read on for the full SlashGear review.

iPad Air 4G launch spreads as regional carriers weigh in

iPad Air 4G launch spreads as regional carriers weigh in

Regional carriers C Spire and Bluegrass Cellular have thrown their LTE hats into the ring for Apple's new iPad Air, confirming they will be offering the 4G version of the new slimline tablet announced earlier this week. The commitment follows AT&T, Verizon, and the other big carriers each announcing support for the cellularly-enabled iPad Air, though C Spire and Bluegrass Cellular will apparently lag behind their rivals with a launch only pencilled in for "the coming weeks."

iPad mini with Retina display supplies a third predicted demand warns IHS

iPad mini with Retina display supplies a third predicted demand warns IHS

The iPad Air versus iPad mini with Retina display shopping question could be decided by severe shortages of the smaller tablet, analysts predict, with suggestions that supplies of the new high-resolution display could amount to less than a third Apple will need to meet demand. "Production is still ramping up on the 7.9-inch Retina panel with low yield rates limiting production" according to supply chain diggers IHS, potentially leading to even bigger backlogs of orders than the original iPad mini faced when it launched last year.

iPad Air sparks iPad Pro tablet talk

iPad Air sparks iPad Pro tablet talk

Almost immediately after Apple's iPad Air was revealed earlier this week, talk of the next generation began. With the name "Air" in Apple's notebook lineup, one of two different naming conventions, word sprung up that an iPad Pro could be in the works. While we've seen more than our fair share of leaks and tips over the past several weeks (and months, believe it or not) of the iPads that appeared officially just this Tuesday, word of the iPad Pro comes only from precedent.

iLife and iWork free limits surface as apps overtake charts

If you head on down to the iTunes App Store this afternoon to see how the topmost downloads are doing, you're going to see Garage Band quickly overtaking the top "Free" spot while the rest of the iLife and iWork apps climb up "Paid". But wait, you might be saying, didn't Apple just say that the iLife and iWork app suites would be free for all users from this point forward? Actually they didn't - what they actually said was that new customers - everyone purchasing a device from September 2013 forward - would be getting these apps for free.

iPad Air replaces 4th gen: where did they all go?

iPad Air replaces 4th gen: where did they all go?

If you're keen enough to have noticed the new listings for iPads in Apple's online store since right around 24 hours ago, you'll have seen the complete axing of the 3rd and/or 4th generation iPad. This replacement was made by the iPad Air, which now sits in stores as one of two full-sized iPads, the other being the iPad 2. There are iPad mini units up as well, but what happened to all those 4th generation iPads?

iPad mini with Retina display hands-on

iPad mini with Retina display hands-on

It's the main thing we complained about in our original iPad mini review, and it's the big thing Apple has addressed in its "iPad mini 2", the addition of Retina Display technology. The new iPad mini with Retina display looks just like the old version until you turn it on, at which point life gets pixel-packed. Apple's 2048 x 1536 resolution looks even more detailed on the smaller, 7.9-inch screen compared to the same res on the iPad Air's larger display, and that means more detailed graphics, smoother text, and an iOS 7 interface we kinda wanted to lick. Read on for some first impressions.

iPad mini 2 Retina a no-go as leak tips thinner body

iPad mini 2 Retina a no-go as leak tips thinner body

We already know that Apple will be holding an event on October 22 where it plans to unveil new products to the masses. Apple hasn't said exactly what the products will be that it plans to show off on October 22, but rumors continue to insist we will see the iPad 5 and the iPad mini 2. Only a few days ago a leaked image claiming to be the case for the iPad mini 2 showed that the next generation iPad mini would get a scant 0.2 mm thicker than the original iPad mini.]

UPDATE: Of course - as you may already realize - not every tip turns out to be true.
