Microsoft confirms support for Qi standard by joining WPC

The wireless charging wars continue. Today Microsoft has let it be known that they’re officially tossing their hat in with the Wireless Power Consortium for the standard wireless abilities quite a few Windows Phone devices already have. Given the idea that Nokia really will end up having their handset business owned by Microsoft in full in the near future, it makes a lot of sense that Microsoft would support the wireless standard they’d already have in place.

Wireless charging standards sign agreement: 3 become 2 [UPDATE: WPC comments]

This week two of the three major wireless charging standards groups have signed an agreement which will have the two technologies be able to exist on the same device. This agreement has A4WP and PMA, aka the Alliance for Wireless Power and Power Matters Alliance, signing up to allow their two standards to work side-by-side. The odd-man-out is the WPC (Wireless Power Consortium), the group that works with Qi-standard charging.

It's not that it's hard to plug in a wire to charge your iPhone, it's just not that convenient. Toyota is working on wireless charging systems for its next-gen Prius, intending to put such connection-free technology into verification testing in 2014 in the US, Japan, and Europe.
