Motorola’s first-gen XOOM launched with plenty of promise at the beginning of the year, but Honeycomb – and some expensive data plans from Verizon – left the Android alternative to the iPad looking less than appealing. Now Motorola’s second attempt at the segment, the XYBOARD 10.1 and XYBOARD 8.2, have arrived, fresh to the SlashGear test bench with new angular styling, faster processors and some special features that might at least give new tablet shoppers an idea what exactly to use big-screen slates for. Google Currents social news app for tablets imminent

Google is tipped to be on the precipice of launching its new socially-enabled news reader app, Google Currents, with the iPad and Honeycomb software expected to go live on Friday. Tipped back in September under its codename Propeller, now AllThingsD's source claim the app - which will rival stalwarts like Flipboard and Pulse, as well as new challengers like Yahoo!'s Livestand - is set to make its official debut before the week is out. Amazon readies Kindle Fire apps: Netflix, Facebook, Pandora, more

Amazon has confirmed its initial line-up of Kindle Fire apps, ahead of the Android-based ereader/tablet's arrival next week. Among the promoted titles will be Facebook, Pandora, Netflix and Rhapsody, along with games such as Words With Friends and Plants vs. Zombies. NOOK Color Adds New Exclusive Game: Aces Bubble Popper

The Barnes & Noble NOOK Color eReader is really setting itself apart from the competition. Earlier this week, the eReader got a firmware update that brought new features including NOOK Email and apps. The ability to download apps is perhaps the niftiest part and included several games for the eReader. New games will likely be piled on quickly, and today's latest release is the Aces Bubble Popper from Concrete Software, who also released Aces Jewel Hunt and Pocket Ants for the device. Android Honeycomb Review

Google doesn’t mince its words: the search giant told us that smartphone versions of Android weren’t ready for tablets, and that we should wait for its slate-specific build, and boy have they delivered. Android 3.0 Honeycomb marks a significant shift from the Android 2.x we’re familiar with on handsets, with a refreshed UI and functionality to make the most of tablets’ expansive touchscreens. It debuts on the Motorola XOOM but we’re already expecting it on the imminent Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and LG G-Slate; check out the full Android 3.0 Honeycomb review after the cut.
