HR Giger dead at 74: A legacy of Aliens and bizarre Batmobiles

HR Giger dead at 74: A legacy of Aliens and bizarre Batmobiles

Swiss surrealist artist H.R. Giger has died at the age of 74, best known for having designed the iconic Xenomorph star of the Alien movies, for which he won an Oscar. Giger's style, a blending of biological parts with mechanical elements, was dubbed "biomechanical", and became a recurring and challenging theme throughout his life. However, while he may be most memorable for designing the creature that terrorized Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley, Giger's CV has many unusual twists to it.

Alien: Isolation game places Ripley’s daughter alone in space

There's a video game being developed right this minute by Sega with a main character that, if you've never seen the Director's Cut of "Aliens", you might never have known existed. This character is the daughter of Ellen Ripley, a character that died (or so this one tiny scene suggests) while Ripley was floating home from her original Alien mission - not all that far from Prometheus. Here in a new game with a working title of Alien: Isolation, we're to take to a sparse universe not unlike that original film, doing so behind the eyes of the younger warrior.

Oldest primate fossil found: how these bones could be “evolutionary”

The creature newly discovered and named Archicebus achilles has become the latest world's oldest primate fossil and may be shedding light on our evolutionary roots soon. In a paper published in Nature, the international weekly journal of science, researchers have made it clear that this find may help fill gaps in the fossil record regarding the earliest phases of primate evolution. Here we're seeing a tiny creature whom paper coauthor and Northern Illinois University researcher Daniel Gebo noted was "particularly interesting [due to] it's completeness."

Ender’s Game trailer reveals child genius training for future alien war

It's finally time to get a good look at the film adaptation of the science fiction novel classic Ender's Game with the first official full-length trailer for the movie. This trailer is just under two minutes long and has Harrison Ford speaking in what might be the least intense declaration of intent in the history of on-film representations of the military, rivaled only by his admittedly unenthusiastic voice-over for the theater version of Blade Runner. That said, the visuals appear to be bringing a fully prepared vision from director Gavin Hood and producer Bob Orci.

Ender’s Game movie trailer imminent as viral campaign makes way [UPDATE]

Today is the day the Ender's Game movie gets its first full-length trailer. But before it's released, the company behind the production is pushing a full-breadth viral data campaign to support it. Much in the same way Prometheus was supported by the virtual presence of the company Weyland Industries, here Ender's Game is heralded by the International Fleet. This government group plays a major part in the Ender's Game story, and here appears with propaganda aplenty for those anticipating the film.
