Philips shedding HDTV business amid dire losses

Philips may be producing some of the more curious HDTVs around at the moment - its Cinema 21:9 range of super-widescreen sets, such as the most recent Gold model, are particularly eye-catching - but it seems converting that curiosity to purchases continues to escape the company. Philips has outed the latest in its ridiculously wide Cinema 21:9 HDTV range, the new Philips Cinema 21:9 Gold Series TV. The first 21:9 aspect 3D capable TV, the new set has a 50-inch panel which uses passive 3D glasses, along with Smart TV functionality and real-time 2D-to-3D conversion. amBX ambient light & rumble tech coming to PS3

amBX, the Philips Ambilight spin-off, have announced that they and Sony have signed a deal that will see real-world sensory experiences - for instance light, colour, rumble and air flow - used by the PS3.  The agreement will see amBX technology made compatible with Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Philips Ambilight amBX division spun-off, want to get into gaming

The Philips Research team responsible for the Ambilight color-changing LED system used on several Philips HDTVs, and which recently was established as the amBX division, has separated and will be run as a single business.  While Philips will still licence the technology - which synchronizes colors to emphasize the on-screen image - amBX will also market it to other companies in the hope that it becomes an industry standard.  As well as color, amBX devices can also use sound, rumble, airflow and, soon, smell to augment the on-screen entertainment or gaming experience.
