Peek Retina adapter brings eye exams to smartphones

Peek Retina is a smartphone adapter that aims to bring eye examinations anywhere they're needed, such as remotely located medical clinics that don't otherwise have access to the necessary hardware for performing eye assessments. Peek stands for Portable Eye Examination Kit, and as its name suggests the adapter is entirely portable -- small enough to fit in a pocket along with the smartphone to which it will be attached, offering both a retina camera functionality and an ophthalmoscope while leveraging the smartphone's camera.

Both the Coupe and the Shooting Brake body-styles have been given face-lifts, with tweaked designs and new Multibeam LED headlamps as an option, using cameras to monitor the road ahead as well as other traffic and adjusting the play of light accordingly.

This interface is one of the bare-bones first steps toward creating a slew of customized user interfaces for Google Glass, starting here with the Explorer Edition of the device. CyanogenMod developer Brint Kriebel (aka bekit) has been so kind as to provide us with some up-close photos of the software on his own Glass device, too.

Curiosity plays peekaboo: New self-shot before 9-month mountain climb

NASA's Curiosity rover has set mountain climbing as its New Year's Resolution, with the intrepid space explorer headed up a Martian peak  for its 2013 challenge. The nine-month trek - punctuated with pitstops for drilling and sample analysis - will see Curiosity clamber up the 3 mile high Mount Sharp at the center of the Gale Crater it landed near, further hunting evidence that the red planet might once have supported microbial life. Before that, however, Curiosity couldn't resist snapping another self-portrait - with the mountain clearly visible in the background.
