Toshiba ZX900 Series CELL TV getting 2010 US release

Toshiba ZX900 Series CELL TV getting 2010 US release

"CELL," says Toshiba about its new range of CELL TVs for the US, "makes everything better", and while we're not sure whether that includes lingering health issues we'll concede that the company's new ZX900 Series CELL TV certainly cheers up any mild Winter depression we're having.  The vast 1080p HD set will come in 55- and 65-inch versions, and the CELL engine apparently throws in 143 times the processing power you'll find in a regular TV.  As for what Toshiba does with all that horsepower, they use it to churn through their new True Super Resolution technology.

Avi Greengart’s Products of 2009

As 2009 comes to a close it’s time to acknowledge some of my favorite tech products of the year.

The first “product” on the list works across the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch: Apple’s App Store. The hardware upgrades to the iPhone and iPod touch in 2009 were less impressive than the price drop on the iPhone 3G and the greatly expanded capabilities that application developers were given for writing for the iPlatform. The developer community responded with tens of thousands of new apps that turn an iPhone or iPod touch into a portable game console, heart monitor, prayer book, GPS navigator, eBook reader, and myriad other possibilities. Other platforms also rolled out app stores this year, but Apple retains an enormous lead in both the number and quality of options.

DIY gamepad attachment for Sony UX UMPC

DIY gamepad attachment for Sony UX UMPC

Sony's UX UMPC might be capable of playing games in hardware terms, but while the controls are great for an ultraportable handheld they're not so useful for Unreal Tournament 2004.  Owner Dan Middle decided he wanted a better interface, and so hacked up a cheap USB gamepad.  With the controls fixed back to back, all eight buttons are available to just one hand, leaving the other for aiming with the UX's mouse control.
