iPad hits 68% share

There's no denying that Apple's version of what everyone else in the world calls a tablet has been one of the greatest successes in gadget history, the iPad today being shown by IDC as having a 68% share in the market for tablets and tablet-like devices. The IDC group shows the Apple worldwide tablet market share increasing on the whole from 54.7 percent in the holiday quarter at the end of 2011. These numbers have been shown to be sucking the blood of the Amazon Kindle fire market, it falling steeply from a 16.8 percent share in the fourth quarter of last year to a rather scary 4 percent here in the first quarter of 2012. iPad dominance dips but Android still playing catch-up

Apple's tablet market-share has dipped but the iPad looks set to continue dominating the segment over the next four years despite the best efforts of Android rivals, according to research firm predictions. The iPad held 54.7-percent of the worldwide tablet market-share in Q4 2011, IDC's figures suggest, down from 61.5-percent in the previous quarter, though those figures disguise the fact that Apple shipped more than 4m units more in Q4. By 2016, meanwhile, the iPad is set to ship 94.7m units per year, for 48-percent of the overall tablet market. Read The Full Story

Low-cost Android tablets only occasionally turn out to be as cheerful as they are cheap, but Pandigital is spreading its bet with a new trio of Android-powered models that all slip in at under the $190 mark. Pandigital's larger, 9-inch Android tablet/ereader - spotted clearing the FCC earlier this month - has shown up for sale, with QVC offering the Android slate at $213.80.
