Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus hit Verizon Jan 25; webOS getting video capture

Palm have announced the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, and as expected they're headed to Verizon Wireless.  The Palm Pre Plus doubles memory to 16GB and drops the navigation button, while the Pixi Plus gets the WiFi that was missing from the Sprint Pixi.  Meanwhile both Verizon handsets will get a new 3G mobile hotspot application that, like a MiFi, will allow users to share their EVDO Rev.A connection with up to five connected WiFi clients.

Verizon Palm Pre Plus, Motorola Devour and LG VS750 tipped incoming

Details of Verizon's upcoming smartphones have leaked, and if you've been waiting for a new WebOS, Android or Windows Mobile device from the carrier then you're in luck.  The Palm Pre Plus, Motorola Devour A555 and LG VS750 have all been tipped as arriving over the next few months by PhoneArena's tipsters, though right now details on all three are reasonably minimal.  It's unclear, for instance, what the difference between the Sprint Palm Pre and the Verizon Palm Pre Plus might be.

Sprint Palm Pixi gets WiFi transplant from Pre Plus [Video]

The absence of WiFi from Sprint's Palm Pixi was all the more galling when Verizon's version, the Pixi Plus, went on sale with its extra shot of wireless.  One owner, PreCentral forum member gitit20, decided that the original Pixi was ripe for a shot of DIY modding, and so he's transplanted the wireless card from a Verizon Palm Pre Plus into his Pixi and got the whole thing running.

We'll never argue with more apps showing up for the Palm Pre - after all, they just pave the way for a software download frenzy on the Palm Pixi when that arrives later in 2009 - so we're glad to hear of another two webOS titles fresh to the Palm Beta App Catalog.  First up is gDial Pro, an app which can be used to access and manage your Google Voice account; second comes iLike Concerts, a tool which looks out for your preferred artists and flags up nearby performances.

Japanese bank plans to use palm readers instead of cards at ATMs

ATM systems that we use today work pretty well, but there are flaws with security of the systems that can allow hackers and thieves to take money from accounts not belonging to them. Some people also use pin numbers that are easily hacked allowing other people to access their account if they find the user's ATM card. One Japanese bank called Ogaki Kyoristu Bank has a new plan that will significantly increase security.

Acer Aspire S5 ultrabook: 15mm thick plus Thunderbolt

Acer has revealed the Aspire S5, apparently the world's thinnest ultrabook at just 15mm at its thickest point, and offering a high-speed 20Gbps Thunderbolt port. The 13.3-inch ultraportable resumes from standby in 1.5s, Acer reckons, and there's Acer Always Connect to collect social network and email messages while the Aspire S5 is in standby mode; alternatively, you can remotely wake the notebook from your smartphone.

TouchPad will be “number one plus” tablet promises HP

TouchPad will be “number one plus” tablet promises HP

HP expects its tablet to be better than number one when it launches. I think the company may be setting its sights a little too high. HP says that it is calling the goal number one plus for the TouchPad tablet when it launches later this year. I guess an argument could be made with HP running away with the top spot in computer shipments, it is number one plus. The tablet market may prove to be a much harder nut to crack for HP though with the huge lead other firms like Apple have in the tablet realm.
