HP Topaz webOS tablet detailed plus Touchstone v2 wireless plans

, Jan 24th 2011 Discuss [3]

Further details on HP's Topaz webOS tablet have emerged, detailing the specifications of the 9.7-inch XGA slate we're expecting to hear about at the event on February 9. According to documents finding their way to PreCentral - and which date back to sometime in 2010 - Topaz will use Qualcomm's dual-core 1.2GHz MSM8660 CPU with Adreno 220 graphics, together with dual-band WiFi b/g/n, optional HSPA and, eventually, LTE and CDMA, and a battery good for over 8hrs. More interesting, though, is the Touchstone v2 dock. Read The Full Story

Palm Mansion to Feature 5-Inch Display, webOS 2.0 Coming to All Devices Soon [UPDATE: Palm's Josh Marinacci Video Speech Added]

, Nov 19th 2010 Discuss [2]

When Palm and HP officially announced the webOS 2.0-equipped Palm Pre 2, we hear that the device would be launching on Verizon in the United States "in the coming months." For HP and Palm, that seems to be the slogan of choice, when it comes to webOS. Today, Josh Marinacci confirmed that webOS 2.0 would indeed be coming to all of the available devices "in the coming months." However, perhaps more interesting, is a new rumor floating around that the Palm Mansion, a name that we've heard floating around before, will feature a 5-inch display. Read The Full Story

Spotify continues to be one of the more compelling mobile applications out there, and the company's next target is webOS.  They've announced that Spotify for the Palm Pre, Pixi, Pre Plus and Pixi Plus - and, we're presuming, the upcoming Palm Pre 2 - has just landed in the webOS app store.  As with the Android, iOS, Windows Mobile and Symbian versions, it allows for searching Spotify's catalog of streaming music and offline playback. Verizon Begins Offering Unlimited Data in Prepaid Fashion, 3G Smartphones Included

, Sep 2nd 2010 Discuss [2]

Prepaid services have been around for awhile, but for the longest time they were never good enough to catch the attention of the average consumer. After all, there's a lot hanging on that contract-free plan. You not only miss out on minutes, but it used to be that you didn't even get the same reception as the customers who signed a contract. Furthermore, you had to buy the phone out-right, without that discounted price tag. Well, while you still have to buy the phone out-right, prepaid plans have certainly become more popular, and Verizon has just made it even more attractive with the announcement that unlimited prepaid plans are now available. Oh, and you can use a Droid X, too. Read The Full Story

Sprint Palm Pixi gets WiFi transplant from Pre Plus [Video]

, Jul 26th 2010 Discuss [0]

The absence of WiFi from Sprint's Palm Pixi was all the more galling when Verizon's version, the Pixi Plus, went on sale with its extra shot of wireless.  One owner, PreCentral forum member gitit20, decided that the original Pixi was ripe for a shot of DIY modding, and so he's transplanted the wireless card from a Verizon Palm Pre Plus into his Pixi and got the whole thing running. HP focus on webOS, eschew Windows Phone 7

, Jul 24th 2010 Discuss [0]

Microsoft's list of confirmed Windows Phone 7 partners saw HP conspicuously absent, and now we know the reason why.  In an interview with CNBC, HP Personal Systems Group VP Todd Bradley confirmed that the company intends to push ahead solely with webOS rather than develop handsets using Microsoft's latest mobile platform.  "Our intent" Bradley explained, "is to focus those resources and really make webOS the best OS it can be." Numerous companies were tipped as potential suitors for Palm prior to HP sealing the deal, but according to BusinessInsider the roster includes heavyweights Apple, Google and RIM.  Their "source familiar with the negotiations" claims Apple eyed Palm for its patent and intellectual property portfolio, while Google are tipped as wanting the same thing but dropping out because they were unaware their Cupertino rivals were actually involved in negotiations. Palm tip “exciting” next year with new devices & webOS update

, Jun 18th 2010 Discuss [1]

While HP has been keen to talk up the positive benefits of acquiring Palm and webOS, they've also been reluctant to commit to any specifics - we've heard about tablets and printers running the platform, but nothing that left us particularly confident about smartphones.  Now, thanks to an unnamed Palm spokesperson talking during an AT&T developers webinar, we have a few more tidbits; nothing concrete, but confirmation that Palm is "working on future devices" together with a "new version of the OS". HTC EVO 4G Touchstone hack adds wireless charging [Video]

, Jun 13th 2010 Discuss [0]

We'll be the first to admit; heavy use of the HTC EVO 4G's WiMAX connectivity will see the battery gauge drop in short order, so anything that makes it easier to top up the juice has to be a good thing.  That's why YouTuber infinitemods' DIY hack to get the Sprint EVO 4G working with a Palm Touchstone inductive charger is so impressive: it allows for easy drop-and-charge powering of the smartphone, just as you'd get with the Pre Plus or Pixi Plus.
