NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet Android Lollipop Review

NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet Android Lollipop Review

This week we've had a look at what it means to be rolling with the NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet with a full Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade. This isn't your everyday average upgrade - it's not like we're using the Nexus 9 that just happens to be branded by NVIDIA. Instead, this is the first non-Nexus tablet to receive the update, complete with NVIDIA's own apps under the hood. This is more than just a software update just for the sake of having the latest and greatest - this is a real-deal update of the abilities of the unit.

IBM and NVIDIA give US supercomputers a brain boost

US supercomputers are having to grow up, with a wider set of tasks the machines at Lawrence Livermore and Oak Ridge National Laboratories are being asked to do by the researchers, national security teams, and others given access to them demanding a change in architecture in order to keep them flexible. IBM and NVIDIA are upgrading two supercomputers - Sierra at Lawrence Livermore, and Summit at Oak Ridge - using IBM's support for the open-source OpenPOWER standard, increasing the interconnect speed of the CPU and GPU processors responsible for doing all the heavy-duty crunching. In fact, so the companies claim, there'll be as much as a tenfold cut in processing time for real-world applications.

It's not just Lollipop that NVIDIA's SHIELD Tablet is getting, with NVIDIA GRID set to offer "Netflix for games" for the Android-based gaming tablet, and at a price that - for the moment, at least - can't be beat. Graduating from the beta that began almost a year ago, GRID effectively puts a whole server farm of GeForce GTX-equipped gaming PCs at SHIELD Tablet and SHIELD Portable owners' service, streaming titles like Batman Arkham City and Borderlands 2 at 60fps to the pair of gaming handhelds.

NVIDIA responds to Samsung’s “false advertising” claim

NVIDIA responds to Samsung’s “false advertising” claim

It is a well known legal tactic, especially between companies, for one to fight back a lawsuit with a countersuit. So when NVIDIA sued Samsung and Qualcomm last September, in what it claims to be the first patent suit it has ever filed, it fully expected Samsung to hit back with a suit of its own, which it did this week. But what it didn't expect was for Samsung, in the same lawsuit, to accuse NVIDIA of falsely advertising its Tekgra K1 as "the world's fastest mobile processor".
