Novatel sue ZTE and Franklin Wireless over alleged MiFi patent infringement

MiFi manufacturer Novatel Wireless has filed a patent lawsuit against ZTE and Franklin Wireless, alleging that the rival firms have infringed five patents "related to key architecture and functionality" of the mobile hotspots. According to Peter Laparulo, the company's chairman and CEO, "Novatel Wireless invented the MiFi Intelligent Mobile Hotspot" and "competitors need to rely on their own inventions rather than infringe on ours."

Bell MiFi 2372: Novatel respond

Novatel Wireless' MiFi 2372 has been making headlines today after reports surfaced claiming the Bell Mobility version of the portable wireless hotspot had been recalled over safety issues. We've just got off the phone with Rob Hadley, Novatel's CMO, to clear up exactly what happened, and as you might expect the actual story belies the hyperbole. According to Hadley, only two incidents of user-induced damage have been recorded - the Novatel labs suggest that one MiFi 2372 owner used a knife or other sharp object to open the battery compartment, while another used "excessive force" and damaged the battery due to over-compression - and, since damaged lithium ion batteries can overheat, the company decided to redesign the battery door assembly so as to make it easier for customers to remove.

MiFi Home: hands-on with the do-all LTE router

Voice, data, and a battery backup for those times when ice storms take out your landline: that's the promise Novatel Wireless' MiFi Home is making, also known as the Verizon 4G LTE Broadband Router with Voice. Unwieldy name but the hardware does a fair amount: like a traditional MiFi it'll share a mobile data connection, but plug a regular wired phone in and you can also make voice calls as if it were a landline, too.

MiFi Tower Smart Home hub due Q3 from “Tier 1″ operator

MiFi creator Novatel Wireless is developing a new home hub, dubbed the "MiFi Tower", not only cutting the cord on traditional voice and data, but integrating smart home functionality as well. The LTE device, already in testing and outlined during the company's recent financial results call, is billed as "MiFi Powered" and blurring the distinction "between fixed line and cellular infrastructure" with home connectivity, digital phone service, and internet access all wrapped up in a portable device that, one day, could enable total migration of voice and data services to IP-based equivalents.
