Nokia Asha 501 hands-on

Nokia Asha 501 hands-on

Take Nokia's estimable skills in crafting solid, affordable smartphones, a dash of MeeGo-learned interface know-how, and a motivating desperation to own the developing market, and you get this, the Nokia Asha 501. First of the new Asha Touch series, and toting an ambitious $99 (pre-tax and subsidy) sticker, the Asha 501 does what Nokia would argue only it can: distill the build quality and usability of a Lumia into something with the mass market reach of an Asha. The 501 makes its debut in India today, but SlashGear caught up with Nokia last week to find out exactly what makes it special.

Wouldn't it be nice?

We're getting ready to end a Tuesday that has produced some rather big news, so let's jump right into it, shall we? By far the biggest story of the day had to do with upcoming the Apple event. Apple started sending out invitations for the event today, using a picture that gives away what to expect at the event (spoiler alert: the iPhone 5 is coming). Nokia N9 sees Jelly Bean port

Nokia N9 sees Jelly Bean port

We’ve seen the Nokia N9 hacked in the past to run Android (Ice Cream Sandwich, specifically), and now the handset has been given yet another lease on life with a Jelly Bean port. Sure, not everything will be working correctly, but matching the latest version of Android with a beautiful piece of hardware is hard to ignore. Work on the Ice Cream Sandwich port still continues, with a lot of features still not working, but hopefully that progress can be applied to Jelly Bean in the meantime.
