Nokia will launch its first Windows 8 tablet in Q4 2012, insiders have suggested, a 10-inch Windows-on-ARM machine using a dual-core Qualcomm chipset as the company looks to expand beyond smartphones. The move, tipped by DigiTimes sources among component suppliers claim, is expected to buoy Microsoft's position against Android tablet manufacturers, with the slate most likely to be powered by a Snapdragon S4 "Krait" chipset such as inside the Windows 8 developer hardware Qualcomm handed out last month. Update: Nokia statement after the cut.

Nokia Windows 8 tablet due June 2012

Nokia is trying to get some of that market share it has been bleeding to Android and iOS smartphones back. Nokia is still one of the largest shippers of mobile phones in the world, but most of its sales are low end and mid range phones, not the profitable smartphone category. Nokia hopes to change that with new devices like the Lumia 800 Mango phone.

Nokia 3D Communicator tipped in dual-display phone/tablet patent app

Nokia is exploring a dual-screen clamshell smartphone design that, like the Nintendo 3DS, would have both 2D and 3D displays. According to a patent application by the company, titled "Autostereoscopic Rendering and Display Apparatus", the smartphone would have a glasses-free 3D display on its top panel and a regular 2D display underneath. “Uniquely Nokia” key to tablet plans says Stephen Elop

Nokia's tablet plans have rumbled along for some time now, with no sign of any hardware - at least that's been revealed to us mere consumers - and it looks like we shouldn't expect an iPad rival any time soon, either. In an interview with YLE, CEO Stephen Elop has reiterated the stance first taken at the Nokia Windows Phone announcement, that the company's engineers are looking at all the possible options from Microsoft's software line-up, along with "other software assets" that likely includes MeeGo.

Nokia T7-00 leaks (but sorry, it’s no tablet)

News of a new Nokia device has leaked, courtesy of the OVI Publisher tools, the Nokia T7-00. The first of what would be a new line of nomenclature for the company, while it's tempting to think that "T" stands for "Tablet", unfortunately that doesn't seem particularly likely; well, not unless you like your slates particularly low-resolution.

Nokia readying 4 Windows Phone 7 handsets, MeeGo tablet rumored

Nokia looks to be hitting the ground running with up to four Windows Phone 7 handsets already in the R&D pipeline. The Phones are rumored to be based on Nokia's "Chasis 1" with a 1Ghz processor and capacitive touch screens. The other two mid range phones will be worked into "Chasis 2" with a slower 800 Mhz processor and resistive screens. In addition, Nokia's rumored Windows tablet entry won't be out until 2012 and will feature a full version of Windows 8, rather than the lean and mean Phone mobile OS. But others think that MeeGo isn't dead and may find a home in the tablet interface.

Nokia's tablet ambitions may see the company slotting a so-called "tweener" device in-between smartphone and the currently available slates, according to Nokia EVP Tero Ojanperä. Speaking at SXSW this week with Rovio CEO Peter Vesterbacka, the Nokia exec suggested that the existing crop of tablets wouldn't be the last word in innovation, and predicted something somewhat larger than a smartphone could find a niche.
