From Cyborgs to Project Glass: the Augmented Reality Story

, Apr 9th 2012 Discuss [0]

Google’s Project Glass has been through the usual story arc – rumors, a mind-blowing concept demo, rabid excitement, practicality doubts and then simmering mistrust – in a concentrated three month period, but the back story to augmented reality is in its fifth decade. The desire to integrate virtual graphics with the real-world in a seamless way can be traced back to the days when computers could do little more than trace a few wireframes on a display; it’s been a work-in-progress ever since. If Google’s vision left you reeling, the path AR has taken – and where it might go next – could blow your mind.

HTC One X Review

, Apr 2nd 2012 Discuss [0]

HTC needed to hit reset on its smartphone strategy. Lulled, perhaps, by several years of leading the Android device market, 2011 brought an incredibly strong push by Samsung and a growing mismatch between the agile software users desired and the bloated, over-stylized interface of HTC Sense. The HTC One X – and the One Series it leads – is the first of the company’s attempt to reclaim its former position, a Tegra 3 toting powerhouse with a big screen, boastful camera and slick design. Still with the specter of the Samsung Galaxy S III on the near horizon, not to mention Apple’s iPhone 5, the One X needs to do more than storm the spec sheet if it’s to make the impact HTC requires. Apple grabs nano-SIM patent

, Mar 27th 2012 Discuss [0]

Apple‘s nano-SIM proposals continue to cause controversy, with Nokia’s argument that its rival doesn’t actually hold any valuable patents to sweeten the deal looking premature in light of freshly-granted tray design. The patent, “Ejectable component assemblies in electronic devices” (8,145,261) was filed in 2007 and granted today, describes a system of “trays that can be loaded with removable modules, inserted through openings in the housings of the devices” that could, it’s suggested, be used for SIM cards and other identify modules. Meanwhile, more information on the Apple and Nokia/RIM/Motorola nano-SIM designs has been released by the ETSI.

There’s a whole lot riding on the Lumia 800. Nokia’s first Windows Phone and the handset that will usher in – so the company hopes – a new era of smartphone relevance and a turnaround in fortunes.
